What I find most interesting is how few of those stereotypes/archetypes are present in our media today.

I still know many of most of them, but they've been replaced as our economy and demographics change.

I'm still wondering how this precedent prevents parallel construction nonsense

Simply requiring an actual, physical filibuster would weaken it's power while keeping it as a check on excess or an option for a principled stand/PR stunt.

even 0.5% interest on recourse debt is fundamentally usury.

Our employers will revolt because we will either cost more or be slower.

The price of an developer is already very high compared to other skilled labor

Re:Why Banks Are Suddenly Closing Down Customer Accounts on Monday November 06, 2023 @09:30AM (#38163042)
“We must know our customers” The bank will take any approach other than having an account manager who knows each customer individually.

This is the biggest reason I make it a priority to bank locally and in person.

Generally it's worth talking to a lawyer about cases like this.

Ultimately "Show me the code" is the only standard that has ever worked for Open Source.

Give me code to reproduce an issue for people who are contributing as developers.

In North America its often considered "crippling" children to give them too much help. I've seen it repeatedly, with some families giving children 3 months after graduation to begin paying rent.

The other option is self-built.

But that's been roughly the way things have always been.

What's changed is the creation of a middle path of "built to sell" homes.

Re:Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @11:02AM (#37237133)
People who can independently produce food have a form of real power that is very hard to resist.

The measures used to keep various peasant and serf classes under control were so extreme in history because if they became able to exercise that power the social order was overturned.

Re:Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @10:59AM (#37237070)
I still see this in rural America. Guys show up and transfer the title on the car for an envelope of cash and a signature.

Same for livestock, butchering, services and so on.

And any time you decide to eff over anyone, you can and should expect resistance.

Because very few companies offer relocation. Living on welfare in a paid for trailer on land your ancestors lived on is much more appealing than moving without relocation for worse lifestyle in a rental in low wage work that will result in a lower effective income in a higher cost of living area.

People are often dumb, but they're not insane and over years they do respond to incentives.

The point is that there was enough water in the desert until people decided building massive retirement communities in the desert was a good idea.
Imposing a protective tariff on goods that are against our interest to sell isn't at all comparable to a 200% property tax
Any time an activist organization presents evidence that the state doesn't contest I assume the whole case was set up by activists and the lawyers on both sides have an outcome that they both want but that democratic processes like election and debate won't create.
The number of grazers that are needed to maintain a prairie or plains ecosystem is far higher than most people assume, and vast spaces in the US are becoming forested because of lack of wildlands management.
Re:CIQ, Oracle, SUSE Create Open Enterprise Linux Association on Thursday August 10, 2023 @04:06PM (#37081067)
I'm not sure that's a bad thing given that the previous approach was hampered so much by confusion about where the value is.

If this is a commitment to a set of source then the players can compete on ease of use, support or other stuff.

Re:Man Spends Entire Career Mastering Crappy Codebase on Thursday August 03, 2023 @08:20AM (#36984820)
The day a professor made me implement a simple http server was the day I achieved code enlightenment.

At that level of abstraction it’s all just strings

But the claim you called BS wasn't that they had 25 year warranties, just that they last 25 years.

As rule my Grandparents had stuff that was out of warranty, but having repairs done was cheaper than replacement. By my parents time things got replaced every 5-10 years.

Unit files seem like a good idea. Does systemd need to do everything it does in order to gain that benefit?

I'm curious what alternative you make use of.

My issue has been that getting an alternative set up was just painful enough that the related learning doesn't fit into a very full schedule.

In my past experience the poor I know are saying, "I would like to be able to afford gas to drive to work, and have a workplace that treats me with dignity and afford a good night on the town a few times a year."

I'd love to know which poor folks you know who have time to worry about global warming.

Re:Google vs. the Open Web on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @04:06PM (#36884145)
The only solution to this kind of thing is to actually roll up our sleeves and make alternatives.

Most people don't have either the skill or time to do that. So we bikeshed instead.

Good rhetoric takes time and energy from both the author and reader
On some level it does seem reasonable for Universities to pursue their own goals, and let industry find or sponsor some means of training their own workforce
Seems simple enough to get someone that vain to cough up an annuity to pay for maintenance and some admins for that building, “we’d hate for your building to wind up like poor Jefferson Hall, we can’t even afford to pressure wash it every 5 years.”
The guys down at the shop aren't talkin about how pretty the snap on tools are.

Make it work. Make it easy to work with. Then make it pretty.

Re:Emacs GUI Library on Wednesday July 12, 2023 @01:19PM (#36698101)
Emacs pretty clearly needs to be split into 3 layers. Elisp The editor - written in elisp GUI/TUI - Also in elisp that call back to the editor functions.
