When I started Chemistry in college, Professor Zumdahl said to by a copy of the CRC Press Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Whether it was new or used didn’t really matter - it’s not like Boltzmann’s constant is changing all that often.

Is there finally a use for blockchain?

I wouldn’t mind a complete recording of my life at all times, provided I get to determine who has access to what. Would end a lot of I never said that arguments in my house.

In my graduate engineering program you could always tell who came from high caste families and who came from low caste families by how they performed in the lab.

I loved learning about jerk, snap, crackle, and pop as higher-order derivatives of position wrt time in physics.

My grad program had an advanced math sequence that was traditionally numerical methods for solving PDE’s and boundary value problems. Except my year, a visiting professor made it infinite series solutions using laplace transforms. Because why would you want an inexact numerical solution when you could have an exact solution to whatever degree of accuracy you need. Line integrals have their own special place in hell.
Or officer commissions purchased.
If you taxed them like that how would Daddy Warbucks be able to afford adopting a redheaded orphan with musical talent?

The only thing that could possibly be worse than the BH KJA books covering that era would be a Hollywood rendition of those same books made to capitalize on the success of Dune Part I, II, and III.
Talk about doing a freeze of these frontier models with China seems to focus solely on the commercial aspects. With the history of the NSA (remember Snowden) I’m sure the various spy agencies have their own AI datacenters up and running with no plans to stop.

I think they cheat somewhat with the ocean when far from labdy

On my optimistic days I feel like we are living in a Zanzibar Shockwave Rider future. The rest of the time it feels like Sheep Look Up or Jagged Orbit. Highly recommend John Brunner

They should license Hello Cuthulu as a mascot
Re:AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:10PM (#49901441)
I don’t think all of the data centers will ever be built. In that respect I see this bubble like the railroad building bubble of the 1800’s. A lot of data centers are going to end up in bankruptcy and sold for losses to a second round of investors.

I expect Open AI or Anthropic to make it through. XAI will go back to being a side hustle for SpaceX. And some open weight model will run on your own hardware or AWS. Copilot will remain a piece of trash and Gemini will be an untrusted 4th option.

Re:Tcl/Tk 9.1 Released on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @04:05PM (#49899552)
I remember using tcl inside pages running under Vignette Story Server circa 2000 before we started with jsp
Imagine if companies could pay meth addicts in meth the amount of work they could get out of them would be incredible.
As soon as you make something foolproof, the universe evolves a better fool
NASA was supposedly a CMM level 5 organization and they still managed to crash a mars probe because of bad unit conversions.

You need to know that addition is a thing and have reasonable confidence that 2+2=4 before attempting 2+3

Same seed gives the same sequence. Use that to debug Monte Carlo simulations all the time.
Re:Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results? on Monday September 07, 2026 @11:25PM (#49605371)
This has all happened before when the CSS encoding scheme for DVD’s was cracked with the short decss program. And the MPAA wants after everyone and every posting of the code. I had the Tshirt with the code that I bought to support the guy being sued.
Re:Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results? on Monday September 07, 2026 @10:38AM (#49598946)
Why bother publishing the code? Anyone with LLM access can recreate it. Instead write up your findings on how it works. Publish that in a blog, submit it to Wikipedia and Reddit. Player piano did security through obscurity. Now make it less obscure.

Please note: This is America where potential civil immigration charges can result in summary execution because poorly-trained wannabe-cop racists with guns make needless escalations. If law enforcement thinks it’s a crime, it’s a crime until the courts say otherwise.
But you can smuggle them in containers and trucks to accomplish the same strike thousands of km’s away.

Widows are when the final line of a paragraph starts the next page. Orphans are when the first line of a paragraph ends a page.
Example see the Pine Drama shorts on Tim Tok. 5 sec shots with inconsistencies strong together into a 30 sec clip that is 1 part of 56.
Only app data, not the apps themselves. On restore you need an internet connection to redownload the applications.
Re:Secondhand book sales are booming. Is it because of AI? on Saturday August 15, 2026 @11:30AM (#49311424)
Which is completely bonkers, because they are going to go on and make copies of their scanned copies- for backup purposes.

It would have made more sense for them to be required to store, maintain, and never sell the original.

What if taking the first picture of the Mona Lisa required it to be destroyed?

Night flying, mountain terrain, little moonlight. Pilots focused on distant landing point and hit intervening ground on descent.

A crash is usually the end result of several previous bad decisions.
