I don't know enough about the second part, but I think your point about etymology is good. Languages have always and will always drift (although probably less so ever since text started influencing our pronunciation). Orthography soon becomes dated. At least with the original spelling you can trace it back to some logic that made more sense. Also, getting a sense of the etymology is instructive in it's own right.
