Whites dropped from 75% of the United States population in 1990 to 57% in 2020. That’s a huge demographic shift in a very short time span.

But I haven’t belonged to a tech team or department in the last decade (mainly at larger tech companies) that was composed of close to 57% white engineers. Black and Latino engineers were similarly underrepresented, or more so.

East Asians (esp. Chinese) and Indians are massively overrepresented in US tech companies relative to all other groups. There’s not much companies could do to address this because explicitly hiring fewer Asians to balance things out would be seen as discriminatory (see Harvard).

This is because “diversity” in the US really means “not white. You don’t get any diversity points by hiring fewer non-white people. You just open yourself up to lawsuits. Nor would they want to “fix” this because East Asians and Indians are also massively overrepresented in engineering classrooms and the pool of qualified job candidates.

>57% in 2020

You're forgetting that most of that demographic shift are children. The white population over 25 is closer to 75% still.
