No idea why the BLM movement picked him as their hero rather than someone like Elijah McClain.

Nobody picked Floyd as a "hero".

He died, on camera, as a police officer joked around with his buddy while that officer killed him through undue force.

Turns out being able to show it on the nightly news does stick a little.

BLM picked no one. The people who run the media made him a martyr specifically because he was a vile sort. "All who must obey, listen! Give praise and copious tears to this career criminal thug who overdosed on a ghetto speedball while resisting arrest to avoid the trivial charges and momentary detention that he would have gotten for passing bad twenties, likely to clear a debt with his dealer." That's the conspiracy theory anyway. A real martyr doesn't have the same effect because everyone can agree it was a bummer.

If “vile sorts” have no rights, none of us do. Injustice anywhere, may disagree with what you say but defend your right to say it; this is a common refrain across millennia on justice.
