They require fingerprints for TSA Pre. The same people who don't want to be xrayed won't want the FBI keeping their fingerprints on file.
Re:How to Know When It's Time to Go on Sunday July 14, 2024 @08:37PM (#40964380)
I'm sure it's my FAANG bias, but 0.1%? I would have guessed 5%.
Re:I Should Have Loved Biology on Sunday April 21, 2024 @09:24PM (#40110722)
I'll defend some of what [flagged] was saying.

The pay is pretty fair. They're teaching material that every high school graduate should theoretically be able to teach, so the barrier to entry is low. Most of the prep work can be reused for the next year. Their hours are OK, and they line up with when their kids are in school. Plus they get summers off. It's a shitty job if you actually care, but pretty cushy if you check out and just do what's required.

This might be one of the few times a big tech name you know is actually selling your data. Most of the time when people say that, they mean Google and Facebook, but they actually keep your data to themselves and use it for ad targeting.
Re:Ask HN: What new laptop would you get? on Sunday March 10, 2024 @04:54PM (#39662441)
Asking honestly, not to troll, but is everything still an ordeal? Last time I tried, I remember having issues with my printer, hidpi display, external USB-C display, configuring the thinkpad trackpoint, not to mention UI inconsistencies worse than than 6 generations of Windows UIs.

It's validation. Windows has gone downhill, Apple locks you in, you use Linux on principle.

I find the look weirdly attractive.

Ask HN: What new laptop would you get?

My laptop's almost 6 years old. It's starting to have reliability issues, and the battery life isn't very good. The landscape has changed considerably since 2018, and I'm not sure what should get. I use things like IntelliJ and Photoshop, so Chromebooks aren't an option.Historically, I've used X1 Carbons. I like that they have just enough ports, are light and repairable, but Windows has started...

In a strictly business sense, Uber made the right call. Paying $35,000 plus lawyers to learn this is a service they need to provide is cheaper than building it preemptively. In a human sense, it's pretty fucked.
Uber gonna Uber, but I'm surprised someone in management doesn't realize this is a bad look, read the tea leaves, and buy a few wheelchair taxis and have Uber-employed drivers to handle this in cities with over 100,000 people.
Re:Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team on Saturday November 18, 2023 @11:41PM (#38329050)
I'm not sure if it will actually be like that. In just a few years, AI will be so widespread we'll just assume anything not from a source we trust is fake.
Re:Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says on Saturday November 18, 2023 @07:15PM (#38326622)
I was thinking more Amazon than Apple. Hiring an outsider to a team just to have someone to fire is supposedly common there.

Both those resumes read as not being unqualified for the job, but their primary qualification is being women.
You don't want to be the odd one out on a team since you'll be the first to get laid off. Either find a team with a good mix or stick to your own color.
I was looking into getting a UPS for my server. Some UPSes do power conditioning, and all do AC/DC conversion. I got to wondering why I can't buy a UPS that outputs DC and feed that directly into a silly looking PSU.
Are you proposing Meta only serve lightly targeted (time of day, region) ads? These services don't pay for themselves, at least not without ads.
As a single guy, I'm checking the ladies' hands for rings all the time.
> derives its value from its rareness

Hah!

The big issue with choosing a smaller, natural stone is you can't really be sure it's actually natural. The industry has so many unethical practices I wouldn't be confident in any "certification" that comes with a stone's origin. Even lower-grade stones might just be from lab rejects, or labs intentionally growing good, but not perfect stones.

I'm a solid white male engineer at a FAANG. If I were a woman, the company would bend over backwards to make sure I advance. 80th percentile as a male, they're happy to keep me, but investing in me isn't a priority.
> In one viral TikTok video, Brit Levy, Meta's former diversity, equity, and inclusion policy analyst, said she had to "basically fight to find work"

The only surprising thing here is that people who work in the DEI space have deluded themselves into thinking there's that much work to do.

Re:Tina Turner has died on Wednesday May 24, 2023 @03:39PM (#36062975)
Do you think it would be different for a parent in their 90's to see one of their kids die at 67?
Late 30's no kids, no stresses beyond the threat layoffs and still being single.

I recently tried playing some video games adjacent to ones I've loved before, and I found it really hard to get into them. The games are Red Dead Redemption and SimCity 4, so the graphics and gameplay mechanics are ok. It's just been hard to really get into them.

Not just juniors. I'm a senior engineer (10+ years exp). I recently changed teams, and even with knowing how things work at the company, onboarding has been challenging. It takes a lot more active effort on my end, and the results are still worse than in-person onboarding.
I worked somewhere in midtown. We had access to a small roof above the main terrace. We were up there drinking after a party at 2 AM, sitting on the wall 8 stories up. I'm thinking don't fuck up because if you lean back, there's nothing between you and Sixth Avenue.

This is one of my "I could have died" moments.

Someone was buying all those bored apes with money from somewhere. Perhaps they were also bored apes.

Student loan payments are still being deferred, and unemployment has been low for at least a year and a half.

> Those stimulus checks ALONE were a TON of money for most people

Or $0 if you're a SWE living on the coasts.

I realize we make a lot, but we pay a lot in taxes. Just send the $3,000 check to millionaires and don't worry about it. I'm getting frustrated with the government telling me I'm rich while I can't afford an upper middle class home.

My not notable FAANG job is within the top 100 pay for government jobs.
If you blow the whistle on big tech for doing something illegal, you get a pat on the back and a cash reward. Blow the whistle on the US government doing something illegal and you're either hanging out with your new friend Vlad or in pound me in the ass prison.
"The market" is a bunch of people and computers all making their own guesses that may or may not agree with with the guesses expert analysts make.
