There are a lot of ISPs, even consumer wifi gateways that mess with unencrypted traffic. HTTPS is the only way to ensure that the data served is what the user received.

This. This is so mind-blowing that in 2022 people, I presume knowledgeable engineers, don't care about their privacy and security, and willingly suggest to let ISPs and whatnot inject ads and even miners sometimes [0].
