I got myself a minimal second phone yesterday. 10 dollars for 4 months with ~160 minutes.

This second phone will always be on loud if anyone actually needs to get a hold of me.

Otherwise my phone (as I like to say, "butt computer") will always be on silent. I check it roughly 3 times a day for responses. All other times I pick up my phone it must be with intention. I record myself whenever I pick up the phone without intention or out of curiosity of notifications of new messages.

We must create arbitrary rules for ourselves to protect us from society. Then you must keep track of when you break your rules. It doesn't really matter how good or what your rules are. You just need to make them and then create ways to make sure you follow them. After a while you won't need to keep track anymore.

> No. Nothing is an urgency.

Until someone you love is in the hospital. Or almost any emergency, really. Then you want to be reachable no matter the time.

Even in an emergency you're virtually never the critical chain in the response.

First responders are. Bystanders are. The staff at the hospital are.

There can be cases in which it's helpful to advocate for someone (unfortunately in countries with private-payor adversarial healthcare systems this does approach a necessity at times), or to comfort. But that's a role that's very rarely time-critical.

Source: trained and experienced at first aid, treating emergencies, witness to numerous accidents and injuries (and on the recieving end in a few myself). There's an immense pressure and often an assumed obligation to be aware and respond. In terms of actually positively affecting outcome ... the role is grossly overstated.

The one critical exception is when engaged in remote activities (hiking, mountaineering, sailing, etc.) where you might be a required part of an initial help-summoning chain. That's the exception for most people.

Keeping a calm head, ensuring that qualified help *i

Who said it was about providing medical assistance of any kind?

What services are you proposing receiving at a hospital?

Knowing that a loved one (in my case, a panicking, confused, and hurt niece who was in a bad accident with her younger sister) is in said hospital so you can come there and support them.

I was her emergency contact, and my presence there meant the world to both her and her sister.

Ever since I got my first iPhone around 2009 I've always set all of my notifications to off, everything from phone calls to SMS, and all the apps. Not one single notification pops up. Unless I'm expecting an important call I don't feel like I should be notified for everything. It has worked great for me and not getting distracted as much.

I really wish you phone numbers would die. They are extremely impractical if you travel a lot yet every gov service requires one.

Actually, Lately I prefer people calling me. All other notifications are silent.

“I’ll call you back” only works if somebody keeps his sound active.

All of the following are severely unappreciated:

- Needless texts.

- Endless text/chat chains. (A call would be better.)

- Interminable phone conversations. I'm not referring to talking to a friend, I'm referring to transactional calls where the transaction fails to occur.

- Endless email chains. As with texts. At least the increment size is larger. Again: fish or cut bait. Interactive discussion should be interactive.

- Anything unsolicited.

I've become quite hard to reach. It suits me fine.

I don't have that many people that call me, so I don't really suffer that problem.
