Not to mention the Holy Roman Empire which lasted for about a 1000 years till 1806.

The "Holy Roman Empire" was feudal alliance in no way comparable to the Roman Empire - not that it was insignificant but basically entirely different.

HRE did claims legitimacy, and had the weight of the Catholic church behind it. Tension brewed for centuries between HRE and the Eastern Empire as to who was the legitimate emperor.
