Someone needs to produce an 18/36 game, in which rival minicomputer vendors attempt to build hardware and software value networks. Instead of terrain, incumbent mainframe value networks provide a difficulty landscape...

That would be a good Kickstarter!

Incidentally, I think 18xx has been going through a mild resurgence as board gamers graduate from the economic Euro-style games and into the rules-heavy games, eventually becoming curious about this 18xx genre. It's been creating a bigger demand, and as such, many 18xx titles are getting reprinted commercially, instead of the traditionally hand-made variety.

For ages I've been having the idea of an 18xx style game about the "new economy" of the 1990s dotcom boom. The main feature would be that the stock market would work exactly the other way around: if you pay dividends, your stock goes down, but if you withhold and invest in growth, your stock goes up, reflecting all those internet startups that never made any profit but were still valued incredibly high.

I never really figured out how the operational aspect of the game should work, though.

I'm going to ponder how to design the game artifacts.
