Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:02AM (#50338755)
But what if you do want to watch Netflix and Nebula? Then you're going to need a network anyway. I'd like a TV that does that without even trying to spy on me.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:29AM (#50335495)
I love this. Do simple procedures like this exist for every smart TV? For every smart device?

And how well does it work in practice? My experience with setting up my own media box suggests that online community solutions, no matter how well integrated, will always still have some rough edges that you don't see in commercial products (subtitle sync in my case).

I do think this kind of thing needs to become more commonplace, but it's clearly still going to be a steep barrier for most people.

Is that even legal? It shouldn't be.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:47AM (#50333820)
While this is generally true, there are some notorious cases where the director's intent was terrible, and the image definitely needs more contrast and brightness to see what's going on.

It could be a loss leader where they make all their money with ads and spyware. I don't know if that's the case, but if it is, they'd lose money from the purchase and never make it back.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:30AM (#50333735)
I had no idea google play services uses that must power. Another good reason to get rid of it.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:11PM (#50310807)
I've been doing a bit of research, and mailbox.org looks like a winner. It's in Europe and it supports IMAP. Those are pretty much my main requirements, I think.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:05PM (#50306850)
I can imagine people are quickly looking for an alternative now. I wouldn't want to hear this from any company I'm a customer of.

There's also Coach Gowron: https://tenforward.social/@coachgowron
I am astonished how someone could write something so despicable. Well, not entirely astonished; I've seen the works of many internet trolls and usenet flamewars, and this fits right in. But for an official organisation like the FBI to stoop to this, well, J Edgar Hoover, I guess.
Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:28AM (#50287871)
Is it? I've heard of people getting good results with PLA and a 0.2mm nozzle. I don't doubt resin is better, but PLA seems to be acceptable to a lot of people. And it's far safer and cheaper.
It's weird to standardise on summer time instead of standard time. It moves you one timezone to the east. And in western Europe, a lot of countries are already on central European time. Permanent summertime would put them on eastern European time, same as Kyiv. In winter the sun wouldn't come up until 9:30.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:22PM (#50277211)
I've had a Thinkpad with a touch screen and I loved it. Sometimes touching something on the screen is a lot faster than grabbing the mouse, moving the cursor, and then clicking.

Although it's a lot more useful on laptops that can fold into a tablet, which neither MacBooks nor my Thinkpad can do.

Re:Start Doing Graph Theory on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:06AM (#50272280)
I've been doing a lot with graphs over the past couple of years. Basically since I started using neo4j, although not everything involves neo4j directly. I've developed a number of really interesting graph algorithms, but I'm always a bit disappointed by how little use I get out of my graph theory knowledge. I've never needed a Hamilton path or do something with the degrees of my vertices. It's all just logic and intuition.

But maybe I should read this to see if there's anything that applies to my current work.

It's not that the Luddites didn't understand the technology, they objected to people getting fired to replace them with technology. Technology being used to create more unemployment.
So in a way, AI is the perfect tool for them.
Are transformers better at all use cases? Or only a specific subset? This sounds like a classification problem to me, which neural networks have always been pretty good at.
Hardly surprising that models specialised at language aren't as good at a highly specialist task as a model trained specifically at that task, isn't it?

I know some people want to believe that LLMs are good at everything, but they're not. They're good at language.

They're selling the shovels to the gold miners.
Re:SimCity, but with Permits on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:14PM (#50174880)
Wasn't a train line in California cancelled because Musk's Hyperloop was going to do it? What ever happened to that?

My impression so far is that hyperloop is simply a scam.

Re:SimCity, but with Permits on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:59PM (#50174792)
Doesn't the oversight come from the members?

I often read stories on the internet of how dysfunctional American HOAs are, and nobody ever explains why it's like that. HOAs in most other countries seem to work fine. But it sounds like they have too much power and not enough safeguards for democracy (like a quorum).

Unless you are a robot, you'll be fine. GDPR is about digitally recorded information. If you are a robot, it's probably best to delete that information.
Re:Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:54PM (#50111515)
An .exe? Doesn't everybody run their *arr stack on Linux? Well, that's what I do at least. Even so, crap like this has to be easily blockable. And I wouldn't mind if there was a service that handled that for everybody.
Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:45PM (#50111431)
Steam screenshots end up somewhere deep in the steam folder structure. Not simply in an easily accessible downloads or screenshots directory in my home dir.
Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:09PM (#50105731)
Absolutely. I keep falling into these traps. I just got a Mac, and it's terrible at these. It's notorious for hiding the scrollbar, but why would they make it hard to find the thing I just downloaded? Or a screenshot I just took? I can open it, but that doesn't take me to the file location so I can actually do something with it. Although Steam is by far the worst at that.

It's almost as if we didn't learn anything about UX in the past 30 years.

Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:04PM (#50105650)
This looks like peak skeuomorphism. I like it, but ray-tracing the desktop sounds like overkill.
Remember when a major bank turned out to have laundered billions for Mexican drug cartels and was fined only millions?

People would go to prison for crimes like these, but somehow companies get only a slap on the wrist. Whenever a company commits serious, blatant crimes like these, everybody who knew about it and didn't blow the whistle should be considered an accomplice and go to prison. And if it's big enough, or part of the MO of that company, it should be fined the entire value of the company. Nationalise it. Stuff like this should not be tolerated.

Feed it fake images, then.
Re:Why DuckDB 2.0 is faster on Saturday October 10, 2026 @07:51PM (#50038306)
I've had that several times. It says something I don't quite understand (complex, jargon, non sequitur or otherwise makes no sense to me), so I ask it to explain, and it discovers it was wrong. And apparently more people are having this experience. Why does that keep happening?

At least it emphasises the importance of truly understanding what Claude is saying. Because if you don't understand it, there's a good chance it's wrong. Do not ever think you're stupid for not understanding something Claude says.
