And with debit/credit transactions, it's still calculated to the penny, so there's no issues with rounding there.

Depends. Gas pumps actually calculate and bill in mills (1/10th cents).

Half cents coins were minted until 1857. When they were phased out they were worth the equivalent of 58 cents in 2020 dollars.
