I am convinced someone with a gmail address similar to mine is causing me issues. I think at one time gmail may have considered dots differently. Because I was getting emails for an account that was clearly not mine. But the email address had a dot and the domain was not .com.
There's a difference between the address in the "To" field of an email and the "envelope recipient" that actually controls the delivery of the message. The "To" field is never used for delivery, and in fact an email will be delivered perfectly well even if there's nothing in it. That's why you can Bcc everybody and they all still get the message.
In gmail, open the settings, go to "Accounts", add an address to "Send mail as ..." then you can send mail with as many dots as you like.

Could have sworn I tried this. Let me give it another shot! Thank you!
EDIT: Interesting, they no longer send me that email. Probably got flagged.

Won't let you in unless your friends (well, his friends) validate it's you. Tried it!
Part of the reason is that Facebook verifies you're the owner of the email if you say "someone else has my email" by sending you an email which you have to reply to. But Google will reply to all of them with the canonical sign-up so mine has [email protected] that the reply goes out with, which doesn't match so I'm stuck marking all Facebook notifications as spam.
