In Apache I set env variables for dev/staging/prod and pick-up on those in config file.

Much better than having to work with a systems guy to say "svn up, then open the config file and un-comment the production settings at the bottom" or similar, some variant of which I used to do all the time.

We're actually doing something similar. Accidentally swapped our config files when the dev conf was added to our mercurial repository. All better now!
