It is weird not more people just respond this way rather than getting all worked up about it...

It's weird that people like a particular browswer for a number of its feature, but are upset about a change that makes it worse?
Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by tjoff on Sunday June 14, 2020 @05:49AM (#23516369)
Yes, it is kind of weird to like a browser where the company behind it are actively working against the web when there are decent alternatives (arguably better alternatives) that does not contribute to a monopoly that we can not break.

Do you think IE6 was bad? Remember how long it took to get rid of it? Imagine a world where the monopoly leader doesn't just walk away from the browser (which is what MS did with IE6) but actively abuses the situation. It will be orders of magnitude worse. Say hi to amp. Say hi to chrome. Say hi to google. Say goodbye to the web.

I suspect a lot of people in this conversation are not old enough to remember, even if they wanted to.

Maybe universities should have an obligation to promote nonprofit tools (i.e. Firefox) rather than shady commercial software that only happens to be gratis.

Chrome is the new IE. Some sites don’t work (well) with others browsers, so people are annoyed when the browser they are forced to use does stupid things.
Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by wizzwizz4 on Sunday June 14, 2020 @07:26AM (#23516867)
Before Edge came out, I always preferred IE11 over Chrome (on machines that only had those two installed), because IE11 kept the legacy "must compete with Netscape" features like decent contentEditable context menus. And websites that didn't work in IE11 generally weren't worth using anyway.

Now… well, IE11 doesn't even support ES6 properly, and good sites have started relying on that, and Edge is just evil Chrome – unless it's got Firefox installed, Chrome's your only option. But sites that use Chrome-only APIs aren't worth using anyway.

(Oh, wait, Zoom needs either Chrome or a malwarey desktop program.)

Zoom works in Firefox.

And there are alternatives to Zoom, e.g. Jitsi.

...and the malwarey desktop program is also Chrome.

The backdoor part isn't Chrome, though, is it? (If it's a Node.js script bundled with yet another copy of V8, I'll scream.)

This analogy would work if Google was deliberately holding back new features on the web to favor its proprietary operating system but in fact the situation is pretty much the opposite.

I also don't understand why everyone is up with pitchforks at Google on this when Apple did the same thing to URLs a while ago. I guess engineers are just as susceptible to groupthink as anyone else.

They do kind of do that. Rather than going through the consensus process for getting a web standard added, they implement it in chrome then unilaterally write a standard for themselves. See for example, the SGX (signed exchange) "standard" they pushed out.

Most people don't use apple.

Apple is massively popular in the US. The last few projects I've worked on our users were 50% iOS Safari.

It's weird that they complain yet don't actually switch.
Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by cryptica on Sunday June 14, 2020 @05:41AM (#23516328)
Passwords and bookmarks are in Chrome. That's the main point of friction. But I do re-evaluate Firefox from time to time. So far there has often been small things which made me reluctant.

I think this feature is important enough for me to consider switching this time.

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by curiousgal on Sunday June 14, 2020 @05:45AM (#23516347)
You can easily transfer those to Firefox.

That being said, I admit that staright out of the box Firefox doesn't have the same experience but you can customize every little thing about it to make it suit your needs.

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by toyg on Sunday June 14, 2020 @06:47AM (#23516655)
That’s too close for comfort to the Windows/Linux comparison.

This said, I honestly don’t understand what people mean when they say the experience is “superior” in Chrome. It’s a web browser. It browses. You get passwords saved and synchronised. Everything else is an extension. What’s so bad about FF...?

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by NateEag on Sunday June 14, 2020 @08:02AM (#23517062)
The last time I tried to use Firefox for a daily desktop driver, I found its dev tools far less discoverable and powerful. It may be that they're as good or better and just harder to learn. Related, if you're debugging hybrid mobile apps, Chrome is pretty much the only game in town on Android, IIRC.

It also felt noticeably slower at the time.

Finally, with Chrome's market share, good extensions that Just Work are more common there, in my experience. I use a whole host of plugins on desktop, and when I looked at switching back to FF last year, I did not find equivalents for everything.

I did go back to FF on mobile, because I do remember the nightmare of IE 6 and want to protect the web from total Google control. On mobile, I miss the dev tools and array of extensions less.

I would love to get comments from Chrome users

I just could not live without firefox and being unable to share tabs/links from anywhere in my phone to my desktop and or laptop

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by kjakm on Sunday June 14, 2020 @08:13AM (#23517109)
As a Safari user it boggles my mind that Firefox's send to device feature is considered good at all. All my Safari tabs are automatically synced to my phone at all times with no intervention needed from me. It's one of the few things keeping me from switching to Firefox actually.

I hate the hell out of that. My phone is my phone, my laptop is my laptop, just leave them alone.

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by kjakm on Sunday June 14, 2020 @03:57PM (#23520813)
I guess I'm forgetting there are people with dozens of tabs open at a time that probably wouldn't like this. The Safari thing does keep them separate though from your mobile tabs until you open one.

You can do that with Chrome if you are signed in.

You can import your passwords into a 3rd party password manager and enjoy having them available on any devices and browsers supported by the password manager.

As for bookmark, firefox should be able to import chrome bookmark. It can even import saved passwords and cookies so your active session is preserved.

Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by cryptica on Sunday June 14, 2020 @10:48AM (#23518017)
I don't like to trust too many entities with my passwords. You can't avoid having to trust the browser maker but adding another third party password manager to the mix would just make me twice as vulnerable for no good reason.
Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by curiousgal on Sunday June 14, 2020 @02:00PM (#23519755)
Well, you only need one reason to use a password manager.

Is that all? I had no trouble migrating. Maybe it will be a pain going back and forth a lot. Add-ons/extensions might be more painful though. I found it was a good time to clean up and get rid ones i anyway no longer care about.

the latest version of Firefox has an "import Passwords from another browser" feature. just go to "about:logins" and click the menu in the top right hand corner.

A two month old bug they're trying to fix keeps you from switching? Is it present in the ESR?
Re:Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chr... by nxpnsv on Sunday June 14, 2020 @10:06AM (#23517725)
I need more context to judge. But I am sure there occasionally are bugs in chrome too...
