I have to emphatically disagree there. Up until recently Windows didn't even have a decent terminal app. As a developer I tend to shy away from Windows precisely because the *Nix alternatives offer a better development experience, from cli to package management and more.

Not every developer needs a terminal app to feel like one.

In fact Mac OS also didn't have any until OS X.

Real developers automate. It's hard to automate without a terminal :)

You can automate with scripting languages and REPL.

If you're using a terminal to automate on windows, you're going to have a bad time. You'll want something like AutoHotKey which has been around for a long while.

While you're not wrong, I think that you're referencing a different flavor of automation than GP is.

You can automate just fine in a console with PowerShell.

OS X was released in 2001, which is a pretty long time ago.

Yet classical Mac OS developers were able to do without one for 17 years, and I bet most developers actually targeting Apple devices still do without one, when I look around the office over here and see InteliJ, XCode and AppCode.

Doesn't MPW count?
Re:DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux by pjmlp on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @10:59AM (#23247627)
Yeah, but most people were using the GUI tooling anyway and not everyone was a MPW user.

Windows still doesn't have a decent terminal app! The new one just crashes when I resume from suspend. (I believe it's because when the computer suspends, it forgets about the external monitor. But it's still not evident to me why that should make it crash.)

If we consider third parties, ConEmu is well beyond decent.
