Using city name references (alberta/edmonton) rather than Mountain Time is correct in all cases.
Not as much as the car manufacturers influence demand.
Then we’ll see what they do in four days. This is indeed campaigning.

Yes, it’s a currency swap. You need to find another person (such as a bank, or in crypto parlance, a “defi”) willing to take what you have and trade you what you want.
Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:51PM (#50293178)
Lots of hardware requires specifically h.264 as a transit; many of the MPEG standards are built around it. So this lets you get MPEG-PS, or lossless BDs, or some hardware/specialized software decoders for machines that otherwise couldn’t keep up (like set top boxes).
Meaning electric cars at minimum 25% cleaner than an internal combustion vehicle.
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:04AM (#50289251)
You can run a 4to6 NAT, where specific v6 addresses (the ones you’re talking to) are aliased to reserved v4 addresses out of the PUA.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:12PM (#50278336)
Macbook Pros attempt to cater to every slim use case simultaneously, with the idea that if they can handle a use case someone else can’t, they’ll sell another laptop.
It’s kinda funny - half the parts on my boards are TI, but the Sherman fab only does rad-hardened components. It’s cheaper to ship me components from halfway around the world than it is to run a 120mm process node in north america.
Law and Order absolutely lied to you, in many ways. Video evidence is absolutely evidence. Also, the threshold for a traffic stop is very low. “I thought I saw something on a camera” absolutely meets the limit for a traffic stop.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:09AM (#50259637)
Windows for ARM requires specific support for each device. They don’t have it for arm macs - Windows 11 simply will not boot.

As for linux, https://asahilinux.org/ currently supports M1/M2 quite well, and is approaching ready on M3+

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:07AM (#50259616)
Windows 11 is missing devicetree support for arm macs. It won’t boot.

You might be better off waiting for an Asahi linux update.

Not if you want the same model that debugs your C++ to also be able to sort objects by shape and generate a description of a video and pick out a good birthday gift for your cousin
Re:Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:38PM (#50215734)
Nominal dollars refers to the sticker price, in dollars at the time. 1997 was thirty years ago. TVs back then were a large ticket item!
Re:Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:27PM (#50211557)
The price of the median purchased TV in 1997 was ~$4000, in nominal (1997) dollars. The price of the median TV in 2026 is ~$800.

So before we account for inflation, consumers are paying about one-fifth the price for a TV now. When we account for inflation, consumers are paying 3.7% of the price for a TV that they did in 1997. And it’s not even the same TV!

An apples-for-apples comparison, a 44” flatscreen TV with 1080i input was $45,000 in 1997 dollars, whereas the current price for a comparable model is $220. (The 2026 model is still better, with a lower operating cost and no burn-in, but it was the worst I could find.)

TVs today are significantly cheaper than those in the 90s. It’s not the TV’s fault they’re unaffordable.

Stock photos got hit real hard by generative AI. Getty’s in chapter 11 and Shutterstock isn’t doing much better.

The translation market is also wrecked right now. Nobody needs a translator to Polish, the LLM is really good at that.

inform7 is closer to a dsl than a general purpose language. We might be looking at something closer to spark/ada.
You might be missing the point here. Drug discovery and math proof generation are not being sold on steam nextfest.
This is taken from the front page of nextfest.

Many shoppers browse nextfest to find cool new indie games. These are being crowded out by AI slop.

Telling people to ignore the evidence of their eyes is a hard sell. They see a ton of AI slop everywhere and they think that AI is harmful because it turned every site and every platform and every type of human expression they’ve experienced into endless piles of AI slop. Can you blame them? Are they even wrong?
Steam requires any use of AI art or code to be disclosed in the steam description. No vs yes is a simple toggle that can be added, similar to sexual content.
The screenshots and description used to be a good filter - stock unity assets and poor copyediting meant low-effort game. This is no longer the case.
“Here” being HN - curse of an early comment, the “both sides” and “you can’t really tell” got downvotes fast
There appears to be a lot of calls for nuance here.

This is what people are mad about, taken from the front page of nextfest: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5106420/Leverage_Real_Est... https://store.steampowered.com/app/5155900/Ages_TD_Demo/?cur... https://store.steampowered.com/app/5200920/BATTLE_PARTS__POW... https://store.steampowered.com/app/4609270/Naval_Supremacy/?...

These are, as a whole, poorly-balanced, poorly-implemented, and in some cases poorly-conceived. The art is terrible, but the code is also terrible, and the games are not fun. Not only are we lacking authorial intent, we’re lacking any amount of basic quality. Everything from the code to the store page is AI-generated, and it makes it not only be unfun, it robs you of the usual markers of a low-effort cash-grab asset flip (eg, Stock Car Store Simulator)

And there are a lot this year

Re:Android apps running native on macOS on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:41PM (#50159015)
Most iPad apps can already be ran on OSX.
Re:Android apps running native on macOS on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:25PM (#50158873)
Steam is very upfront when you’re buying a windows game on mac. There’s a big banner saying it’s not for your OS and likely won’t work. There’s a compatibility icon for mac, and it’s filterable, for library and store, so you can get mac games. There’s an additional click-through screen on the store page with a checkbox. There’s a lot that’s filtered out!

The proton story pretends like you can run every windows game on steamos, verified or not. It’s quite different and tbh a little dishonest. I wonder how much of it is avoidance of alert fatigue (because many many unverified games do work) and how much if it is trying to sell users on steamos.

Re:Android apps running native on macOS on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:19PM (#50158819)
They would be nowhere near as prevalent. All claude-user output is in the same style, which is really annoying.
Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Sunday October 18, 2026 @09:39AM (#50141014)
Obviously. The breakthrough was called “attention is all you need”! self-attention was being studied as an approach, like alternate schedulers, learning rates, various architecture connectivies, and so on. It turns out self-attention happened to include all of that; that’s the insight.

that's six more than can be displayed at once, and without looking at the entire sentence context it's not possible to choose the correct one.
Re:Tiny Little Office on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:19PM (#50111204)
OSS maintainedness should not at all be taken for granted. If you need something maintained by pros and security experts, that more accurately describes commercial software. FOSS as it stands, with the exception of some (but nowhere near all) major lynchpin projects, is done by volunteers in their spare time.
