I take "aujourd'hui" to mean "today" and "au jour d'aujourd'hui" to mean "to this day", which is not the same.

aujourd'hui = today

jusqu'a maintenant = to this day

au jour d'aujourd'hui is just too awkward to use, it even sounds bad.

I understand it to be slightly different, but I am not trying to argue for its use.
