News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

This salary range is much too low to be posting on hacker news, FYI. Especially for the comically large number of skills that you're looking for. If someone did have all those skills, why would they work for you for the salary that you have posted, rather than many SV/SF companies which will pay many times that?

This breaks the rule at the top that says Commenters: please don't reply to job posts to complain about something. It's off topic here.

We detached this subthread from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16735085 and marked it off-topic.

No worries. Thanks for letting me know of that rule.

This is average for the area and if you can be remote you can live comfortably here. I think the fact they posted the salary is a good thing. IMO there shouldn't be some threshold to make the post relevant, if someone wants the job, it's not like they hid the salary from them.

My apologies... It was a little frustration spewing over from another conversation. I certainly agree that it’s good that the range was posted here and interested engineers are now aware of the opportunity

Because they want to live in Southern Ontario and those are the prevailing wages there? (I don’t know if this is true)

I agree that this seems low even outside of sv, but it doesn’t take a lot of looking to find places where even dramatically lowered salaries lead to better quality of life compared to the valley.

If you mean southern Ontario like London or a small town down there, yeah 70k isn't bad. But in the GTA? With the current housing bubble? I kind of agree that this is a bit low. Especially if you want someone with experience.

My last GTA position paid $120k CAD, and I'm only seven years out of University.

That said, it's not fair to compare the two- virtual team could mean living in Orillia or Tilsonburg, where cost of living is lower.

Doesn’t Canada in general have much lower salaries than the states? 70-80k CAD doesn’t look weird even in high cost Vancouver.

Maybe it doesn’t look weird but it certainly seems weird that talented engineers living in high CoL area are willing to work for a pittance. Yes I’m familiar with the awesomeness of Canada and Trudeau but at the end of the day I do want to have enough disposable income to enjoy the amenities of modern city life.

Oh I agree. As much as I love Vancouver, I could never see myself living there given the salaries. Well, I won't never say never, but it would have to be a pretty great job.

My first job out of university was for $70k in Waterloo, working at BlackBerry, back in 2012. I recently received an offer for $115k at a startup in Toronto (office in Libery Village).
