There are blasphemy laws for instance. Right to be forgotten. Etc.
Re:WebAssembly becomes a W3C Recommendation on Monday December 16, 2019 @01:24PM (#21805530)
Are you sure?

For instance, they are two countries, whose names end with the letter "A"... dare I continue?

Would I be reading this if it was only American companies?
Re:German BSI withholds Truecrypt security report on Monday December 16, 2019 @11:19AM (#21804131)
Isn't Veracrypt just a container, like a hard disk? Why should Veracrypt care about what filesystem you store inside of a container, and whatever you do with its permissions?
>I don't approve of extorting all of Twitch for one companies corporate copyrights including blocking Twitch across an entire country. This is a scorched earth corporate authoritarian/oligopoly approach.

The alternative is that I can host whatever illegal content I want in a big site, knowing they won't have the balls to block it.

Then many countries in the EU are authoritarian too, since they block domain names of websites that link (yes, link, not host, just link) to streams of football matches.
Re:ICANN Delays .ORG Sale Approval on Monday December 16, 2019 @05:56AM (#21802213)
What a shitfest this would be. How much money do you think some governments would be willing to spend to take over the entire DNS system? Don't you see what they did to Bitcoin?
Are you surprised that a megacorporation is acting like a megacorporation? What's the alternative, forcing Google to sell their products? How would you even achieve that?
Re:LocalStorage or WebSQL unexpectedly cleared on Sunday December 15, 2019 @03:12PM (#21798666)
If my phone breaks, I lose my data, and that is my responsibility. You are saying that everything should be backed up on the cloud, I think that's crazy.

localstorage disappearing overnight IS a bug. If I put stuff in My Documents folder on Windows and Windows decides to delete it, that IS a bug too. You could argue that I should have backups, and you would be right, but that's no reason for Windows to delete my files, and that is no reason for me to never use my hard disk.

>i see a lot of mentions of cordova apps. are people publishing apps without a backend (and save everything in localstorage)?

Yes. Why not? You can write a Cordova app that doesn't even have a backend.

Re:Google is not a search engine, but an ad engine on Sunday December 15, 2019 @12:29PM (#21797456)
That's like saying Chrome is faster than Firefox. It might be true, but people here wish it wasn't true, so they'll scold you.
Re:Saving web pages as PDFs in 2019, a real challenge on Saturday December 14, 2019 @01:24PM (#21791107)
>Saving pages as HTML is not ideal because a) you get an HTML file plus a folder, not very practical if you want to retrieve them later

MHTML exists. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MHTML

If you click the links you will see they want to outlaw it.

>Amazon has faced accusations of destroying returned items in both France and Germany.

...and? Is this where we are going, I can't do whatever the fuck I want with the stuff I own?

Re:Win32 on macOS on Saturday December 14, 2019 @09:50AM (#21789732)
"when you open a 32 bit app, 32 bit system libraries remain loaded forever!" okay how about you fix that instead?
Re:Win32 on macOS on Saturday December 14, 2019 @06:27AM (#21788966)
Slack and Discord may have logs but you have to download a massive blob of proprietary software, register and agree to some ToS to access them. Those logs are everything but public.
I pay 23€ a month. I could pay roughly what you pay for gigabit, I just don't need it
ISPs should lay out an expensive fibre network (so expensive that Google Fiber had to give up on it) and I should pay less money? That's just crazy.
I am not in the US. And yes, fibre costs more, even double sometimes. I don't need fibre, I don't want to pay double. Leave my ADSL alone.
Broadband has always meant "faster than dial-up".
Why not? I have a 14 Mbps stable ADSL connection and it suits my needs. Why should I pay more for something I don't need?
How come speeds are not segregated depending on technology? Seems like a shortcoming of this "speed-test program". No wonder they left.
Re:An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads? on Friday December 13, 2019 @07:54AM (#21781110)
Only in mobile. I never do any serious web browsing in mobile, so...
Literally hiding under a blanket: the day blurring out houses becomes widespread, they will just sent a human to look at your house.
Re:Luxury hotel guests keep stealing mattresses on Thursday December 12, 2019 @01:50PM (#21774944)
Oh my god, I feel so stupid. I don't know why I read duvet, not mattress. That's funny though.
Ah, okay. I thought we were looking to solve a problem, instead we want to inflict vendetta because we don't like something.
How would breaking up FB into Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp help with this at all? They don't even share ad inventory. It looks like you're out to hurt the company and that's it.
The mass media is going nuts about not controlling the narrative anymore, that's why they want to bury big tech. They will lose in the end, so I don't know if it's worth it to fight.
