Re:Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech? on Friday March 03, 2023 @11:46AM (#35011927)
This is my dream. I love to sail / fish. But do you have a family? wife? I fear that this kind of thing will be impossible if I settle down, have kids etc.
Oh holy shit I eat a lot of that same Trader Joe’s fig brand. I am horrified…

Great website. Love the workout generator. Good luck.
For the past 15 years or so, every night before bedtime I would proclaim “Time to hit the shack!” or “I’m going to hit the shack”.

In reality it is a “sack” that you hit, not a “shack”.

I use Prusament PLA and definitely notice a smell. I usually open a window in the room where my Prusa sits.
Re:What to do when you 've ruined your life on Saturday January 21, 2023 @01:02PM (#34468505)
It absolutely gets better.

I took a heroic shroom dose and had a life alteringly bad experience. It left me a shell of my former self dealing with crippling anxiety and worse for years.

It got better with time, therapy, and focusing on health and wellness.

Professional help can really be a major catalyst for healing.

I have now fully recovered, feel better than ever and have a great life.

People must realize there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Woah that is so cool. What did the bytes do? Was it code for the lander?
We have known for years that erosion is far greater from tilled soil than from ungrazed or wildlife grazed rough native pastures. The evidence comes from many erosion plots around the world where you mark off a plot of maybe 20 yards by 20 yards and put a V shaped funnel arrangement at the lower end and weigh what you catch washed out over say a year.

But there are lots of other questions. We don’t have much data on rates of soil formation from underlying rock and moisture. And the problem is that actually many of the world’s best soils are the product of erosion. Often, when fields get eroded, the soil just moves downhill to another location. The Nile delta in Egypt and the Ganges plains in India are excellent soils that came from erosion in other places over millions of years.

They are right that zero till usually somewhat reduces erosion. But this technology is under threat because people claim that the herbicide Roundup used before direct seeding causes cancer. ( The evidence for that is very shaky. A large US study of about 40,000 professional Roundup applicators contracted by farmers, who must have had a high level of contact with it, had no higher cancer rates including lymphoma than the average.) Also, farmers, who use a lot themselves, are probably the healthiest demographic in the world.

It’s a complex story.

Re:Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B on Thursday September 15, 2022 @01:58PM (#32855943)
Adobe is a nasty, predatory company. They charged me like $200 just for the ability to cancel my Adobe subscription. Caught me with some fine print.

Will never touch Figma now.

Re:Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B on Thursday September 15, 2022 @09:31AM (#32851633)
Adobe is a disgusting company. I remember they charged me $150 just to be able to cancel my fucking accidental subscription to their awful creative cloud.

Love the idea, definitely will use.

But wondering why it's using ">>". I'm not great with Python. How does this ">>" thing work and why does it make sense to associate elements with ">>".

Re:Ask HN: How do I stop being used? on Thursday June 09, 2022 @01:16PM (#31684004)
I’m confused is this an open source project you are maintaining?

If so, companies asking for help is a wonderful way to start milking some $$$.

Re:Antidepressants and medical uncertainty on Monday April 05, 2021 @02:00PM (#26702294)
Thanks for the reply. That makes sense to me. I am totally fine with taking the meds forever.

I am one of the lucky cases where I experience basically zero side effects and it's been 2 years so far. I have heard of the horror story side effects like getting really overweight, not being able to bone, feeling fatigued, constantly napping etc. But I have never felt any of that. These last two years have been the best of my life.

I always have this concern though that these meds must be doing something sketchy to my brain chemistry.

But it makes sense that the constant terror of anxiety could also produce some neural pathways and brain chemistry that would be very bad...

Re:Antidepressants and medical uncertainty on Monday April 05, 2021 @01:58PM (#26702274)
Well I am really glad you are here and i'm also glad they worked as well for you as they did for me.

Out of curiosity, why even have the desire to get off the meds? do you experience side effects?

Re:Antidepressants and medical uncertainty on Monday April 05, 2021 @01:40PM (#26702027)
I had crushing anxiety and panic attacks that were destroying my life. I almost smoked the business end of a 12 guage.

I started taking Zoloft and my whole life changed. Anxiety and panic attacks completely dissappeared. Zero side effects. Happiness and joy all around.

I get worried sometimes though about what's happening in my brain chemistry. Hopefully irreversable damage isn't occuring. But I suppose that damage is better than the alternative. I also wonder, since I feel so good, if I should try weaning off the Zoloft.

But I can't risk going back into that place of darkness. Life is not worth living when you feel like that.

except for actual securities fraud

Re:Why can't I write code inside my browser? on Friday January 15, 2021 @12:30AM (#25787356)
U can use html / js with browser in like 5 seconds. No need for Node.js. Just write an html file and link a js file and you can code whatever you want.
maybe try to properly host an html page before advising multi billion businesses...
