Re:A little Duplex scepticism on Sunday May 13, 2018 @04:30AM (#17057906)
A blogger criticizing the competitor of the company that puts food on his table.

Just a thought, imagine how this article would be if the companies were reversed. Would it be the same?

And that's how you recognize objectivity...

SPOILER warning!
If you don't mind me asking... Why do you continue working there?
Re:Why Searching Through 500M Pwned Passwords Is So Quick on Tuesday February 27, 2018 @08:57AM (#16473338)
Somewhat related (and nitpicky), but there are some spelling errors (derrivation, seperate...) on the Cloudflare post that explains k-anonimity:

https://blog.cloudflare.com/validating-leaked-passwords-with...

P.S.: As a non-native speaker had to look those words up to check them, as I trusted the spelling from an official blog post.

Re:Google doesn’t necessarily need innovation on Friday January 26, 2018 @06:11AM (#16238321)
Since watching the comedy "Silicon Valley" my perception of blog posts and histories in here has changed for the best.

This reminded me of the montage on season 1 where everybody talks about changing the world when presenting their apps/services...

Re:Google Pay on Monday January 08, 2018 @02:55PM (#16099759)
I think frontend designers should design with a 13" laptop and NO ADITIONAL MONITORS... only the laptop screen.

Then you wouldn't see more designs like this one.

Darwinian Product Strategy?

Quick, someone should register it and publish a book and make a career giving talks about it...

Seriously Facebook, stop treating us developers like sh*t

Long story short:1-Monetizing our mobile apps with Facebook Audience Network for more than 2 years without any problem.2-Facebook reports via email a violation without giving us enough details to fix it.3-Email doesn't have any way to appeal or request more info (really Facebook, we want to fix this and stay in your good graces)4-Join a Facebook group for developer support ask a question and...

Re:The importance of Devuan on Sunday December 10, 2017 @10:11AM (#15891715)
Great, sounds quite simple.

One thing I somewhat miss from what you are explaining is all the aditional things that LXD gets you (snapshots using ZFS, image publishing/sharing, migrating containers between LXD hosts...)

But maybe some of those things are still doable (e.g. mounting a ZFS dataset as storage for /var/lib/machines/containerX)...

Thanks for your answer!

Re:Falsehoods programmers believe about programming on Sunday December 10, 2017 @09:54AM (#15891614)
I interpret it as taking the best possible decision at some moment but not being afraid to change it when new data is available.

(Substitute decision with belief)

Re:The importance of Devuan on Sunday December 10, 2017 @09:51AM (#15891597)
Please, could you share a little of your experience with systemd-nspawn vs LXD?

I have used LXD (with ZFS storage) in production but have not played with systemd-nspawn...

Thanks!

"Erlang Solutions" says Erlang is the bee's knees...

I really like when someone that doesn't have a horse in the race reviews some language (better if it has been used in anger). You gotta value the perspective of a pragmatic engineer that has misapplied a tool.

There's a lot to learn about where a language is best used, but when someone pay is somewhat tied to a language I don't trust the analysis as much.

Re:Why Flutter Will Take Off in 2018 on Tuesday November 28, 2017 @06:53AM (#15796369)
Does anyone have some experience with Flutter?

Have checked out some apps from Google Play and it seems slick.

Super Eyepatch Wolf is a great anime review channel. I have started following some series after watching his reviews.

Re:Apple and Consumer Choice on Sunday October 01, 2017 @05:40AM (#15377055)
Cue "this wouldn't have happened on Jobs' watch".

As an Android user myself I think choice is good but also think Apple should strive to offer as few choice as possible.

It's one of their main strengths.

Re:We pretend we're on Hacker News on Sunday September 03, 2017 @08:23AM (#15161075)
It's somewhat nice that among those racist jokes there are litte nuggets of sincere opinions, opinions that people have but are forbidden (by themselves or moderation/peer presure) to share on places like here.

For all the problems that it brings anonimity has that good facet.

When reading threads like this from 4chan I feel the spirit of the internet of yore, when everything was more free and we were a little more sincere.

Re:Leaving Python for JavaScript on Friday August 25, 2017 @05:47PM (#15102499)
When reading these "Leaving X for Y" I first think that maybe some people are unable to fluently use more than 1 language.

Seriously, professionality is being able to use the right tool for the job at hand.

Well, if kids really want anything be sweets, a toy or more screen time they will beg. That's kid's nature ;)

It's the parents job to be firm and establish some limits, making sure they are respected.

No, languages are like Ogres, they have layers.

If you cannot see the way to exit from that dark place don't be ashamed to ask for help. And please talk to a psychologist, sure it will help you.
Re:The Clean Architecture (2012) on Friday April 28, 2017 @11:17AM (#14220055)
And as always happen it ends misapplied to mobile apps that only paint on screen the JSON received from the server.

Not everything is black or white (no architecture vs clean architecture). You have to think about what you are doing (having fucked up on previous projects help) and don't follow anything you've read blindly.

Silver bullets, yadda yadda

Please don't take this the wrong way but the most important thing in a presentation should not be the graphical aspect of the slides, it should be the content, specifically how you can communicate with the audience with what you're saying verbally.

I have seen awesome talks and it didn't matter if the slides were not pretty.

Re:Richard Stallman on Lunduke Hour [video] on Saturday April 15, 2017 @10:40AM (#14120896)
Just an example of "Worse is better"?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worse_is_better

Motorola Android phones like Moto X Pure/Style had voice identification. You had to record the wake phrase 3 times and the voice assistant would only listen to your commands.

It worked quite well, I don't know why Google Home doesn't have anything like this.

Reading your comment reminded me of this great talk by Christin Gorman about maintainable code:
