Re:Ask HN: How do you store and organize your startup ideas? on Monday October 21, 2013 @11:09AM (#6586015)
This is an extremely dangerous response. The fact that it is at the top is disheartening, especially for this site.

The real problem is treating startup ideas differently than ideas. Ideas are like experiences. They build off of each other and the sum is greater than the parts. Not always in a literal sense either.

The fact of the matter is, the way we arrive at things isn't truly understood. But there are people who propose methodologies that may or may not work for the OP.

A good start would be James Altucher's idea machine: http://www.jamesaltucher.com/2012/10/how-to-become-an-idea-m...

I have been waiting for something like this.

I hope they are working on a JS integration like Stripe has though.

A form POST as their method of integration reduces my confidence level a bit.

You're using my WordPress mobile plugin for your blog and have it slightly misconfigured with your cache plugin.

Send me an email and I will help you fix it.

They aren't the same thing.

I wrote the code to do this if you want to buy it.

Kudos on the video. I was 50/50 on whether I wanted to buy one, but after the video I had to have one!
Reads like a regurgitated press release.
Re:Referly Goes Social - You Can Now Follow Profiles on Wednesday August 01, 2012 @09:22PM (#4326714)
Yawn.
But you are competing with Craigslist. Not to mention the App store has no shortage of classified apps.

Posting to classified sites really isn't that difficult. For some people, sure, but enough to justify a company? The proof is in the marketplace with the lack of traction for Eggdrop, Antengo, and the numerous other apps that claim to make posting items for sale easier.

I would stick to the community aspect. I don't know if there is anything there, but at least it is different then what already exists in the market.

Re:Selling your company doesn’t make you happy on Tuesday June 05, 2012 @04:18PM (#4070601)
This is exactly what it was like for me as well, and I suspect the vast majority of other entrepreneurs.

An acquisition takes away freedom, the thing we value the most.

Elon for president?
I would be weary of relying on Exec for anything substantial to my company because if they get acuihired, they could disappear overnight and leave a gaping hole in my business that could be very difficult to fill.
Re:Stripe CEO Discusses Online Payment Service on Saturday March 03, 2012 @10:49PM (#3661893)
With all due respect to all other YC companies, I think in the end, none of them will even come close to Stripe.
The biggest issue with this is that they don't understand Jim Gaffigan's comedy.

The way to be humorous with something like this is to use a skit from one of his early comedy skits with a witty twist.

Re:Salesforce buys Assistly for $50M in cash on Wednesday September 21, 2011 @11:37PM (#3024748)
Be very careful of an all-stock transaction. I had to pay a lot of money out of pocket to the IRS for shares in a company I couldn't sell.

I found out the hard way that restricted stock stays restricted until the company officially releases it to you (via a letter from their CFO, etc), even if you already satisfied the requirements to release the restriction per the terms of the deal (SEC restrictions, contract obligations, earn out, etc). Apparently this is a grey area and the company is under no obligation to release the stock.

Most brokers won't touch restricted stock with a ten foot poll. They tell you that you have to speak to their special division about restricted stock. And then they want to charge you to help you get it unrestricted and even then, there are no guarantees.

Stock is just a piece of paper until you can put it into a brokerage account and sell it. You MUST understand exactly what it will take to be able to sell that stock and who it will hinge on and when.

To add an additional headache, if you're still working for the company this complicates it even more depending on your role with the company.

TL;DR

I received stock after my company was sold, I had to pay tax on that stock as if it were cash in the bank, now I can't even sell the stock due to ambiguous rules. And the worst part is, even if I could sell my stock at this point, it wouldn't even cover what I paid in taxes.

You live, you learn. Rant over ;-)

Terrible tragedy.

Photo 7 is very peculiar. The pilot is not visible. I am familiar with this cockpit, and there is no where to go backwards, so he must be all the way forwards out of view.

In photo 38, you can see how visible he is when taxiing out.

Just absolutely terrible. My thoughts are with all involved.

Re:First employee of startup? You are probably getting screwed on Thursday September 01, 2011 @11:34AM (#2950421)
A startup is also an opportunity for a guy who hasn't yet had CTO experience but would be a great CTO to jump into the role and prove himself/herself.

The next time around he/she is taken seriously as a CTO in the startup world or in the corporate world.

And that opportunity is worth a lot of money in my book.

Doesn't work on the iPhone either.

It is completely unacceptable that their website loads that slowly.
I felt the EXACT same way. She really did a great job.
Post a link to a site that you created following this that is making $2k a month.

Re:Ashton Kutcher Joins the Airbnb Team on Thursday May 26, 2011 @12:46PM (#2588391)
This is funny on so many levels.
I never understood when someone says put "X" keyword in the subject.

Do you really get that much email? Is there no other way to organize your email?

I always find it odd when people put their own organization onto someone else.

I always enjoy listening and reading stuff from Jason. He always provides value in what he does. Not to mention he is a pretty cool guy.
