Enterprise JS is 400 lines of code... 0 lines of tests. Kudos, NYT.
adding position:relative without knowing what it does... great advice

or maybe even a software engineer...
Can't agree more about the value of Discrete Math. Any programming worth his salt can wax about combinatorics and counting problems at a moment's notice. I'm thoroughly convinced I'd be a few years further along as a programmer had I learned discrete math at an early age.
But anyway, the Teaching Company offers a phenomenal course on Discrete Math, taught by none other than the "Math Magician" Arthur Benjamin (seriously, this guy is magic. He can do 5 digit squares in his head!). It's easily torrent-able / available through more traditional means.
I've also had Magento projects rob me of my dignity, so therefore I'm inclined to be sympathetic.
My solution is to run a linux media server that broadcasts over UPnP to a PS3 using MediaTomb. Streaming is top notch, it even transcodes filetypes that the PS3 can't handle natively.
Anyway, it's way less complicated than a MythTV setup.
freenode #jquery is pretty much the place to be

I've suspected that they've been rolling their own kernels for quite some time, it's rad that they're making these publicly available!
I sat in on Yehuda's breakout session about this at jQueryCon... really exciting stuff! Awesome use of the localStorage.
God forbid you're grouped into a caste of skill sets based on experience and/or expertise. If you started off with a homogenous group of developers and set them to work on building an MVC app, the group would eventually split into who favors scripting, css and markup versus those who prefer writing business logic.
Hire what your team needs. If you need a duct tape dude who can do a little bit of everything, great. If you actually assemble an entire team of those guys, good luck.
wow, this nose dived off the front page.... I wonder why?
oh ya, don't try and criticize a Y-Combo startup on hacker news. Sorry, Andrew.
Object Oriented Javascript by Stoyan Stefanov is worth a read, especially if you've already slogged thru Poppa Crockford's tomes.
Can you bring back Clippy?
I stopped reading when it referenced Microsoft as it's primary source for information concerning security. What a joke.
So that pretty much rules out 4chan, huh?
As a college dropout and business owner at 23, I believe that its the personal responsibility of every American to have a marketable skill that they can get paid for. American Universities no longer provide this--they're playpens for the 18-22 year old set, most of whom are there simply out of obligation to their parents wishes.
If college in American isn't dead, it's certainly dying.
I didn't land a dream job in the tech community immediately after dropping out. I worked in retail for 2 years, while freelancing on the side and keeping a blog which I updated daily. When I did finally get hired, all of those things were evidence that I had a work ethic outside the context of a classroom.
Anyone can be smart in high school, anyone can do well in college, but if you're unable to hustle to get your foot in the door, don't expect me to feel bad for you.

True, the anecdotal evidence seems to be limited to certain hardware. Overall though, this is a huge blow to the users that it effects because it makes Photoshop almost impossible to use in a production environment.
Given that there's a finite range of Apple hardware that Snow Leopard is even compatible with, one would think that testing for repeatable bugs like this would have started months ago--and finished before Adobe signed off on CS4 for use with Snow Leopard.

A forum thread documenting common, repeatable bugs in Adobe Photoshop CS4 running in Snow Leopard. If you need to use Photoshop, DON'T UPGRADE YET!
