Re:How clever a programmer are you? on Friday January 28, 2011 @09:48AM (#2151965)
Clearly you should upgrade your hardware and just use a brute force method.
Re:Write your passwords down on Friday December 17, 2010 @04:05PM (#2017764)
I loathe policies about expiring passwords because it breeds insecurity in the manner you mention. However, my company has this same policy, not because its been evaluated as being a good policy, but because our SOX audits require it.

Another reason to grumble over SOX.

Re:Yahoo Has Hit Rock Bottom And Is In “Absolute Disarray” on Friday December 17, 2010 @03:27PM (#2017629)
I have no inside knowledge, but I have generally found that things are usually not as good as people say they are, nor as bad as people say they are. Nevertheless, Yahoo clearly has some issues to resolve.

Perhaps they are wishing they had taken the Microsoft buyout offer?

I wonder what they would do to ensure a network would be available in remote or combat situations. Perhaps the investment in technology and research would benefit the private sector as well.
Re:When we got to the scanner, I opted out. Then they opted out. on Tuesday November 16, 2010 @01:29PM (#1911032)
This is what I have been thinking. If enough people refuse, its so inconvenient for them that they don't bother to hassle you.
Re:Opt Out of a Body Scan? Then Brace Yourself on Thursday November 04, 2010 @12:55PM (#1869698)
If enough would choose opt out (despite the obvious intimidation tactics), then the entire process would become so inefficient that an easy, efficient alternate would be provided (or the scanners removed altogether). It would likely take a majority of people opting out though.
Re:For Lisa, the World Ended in 1995 on Thursday October 28, 2010 @10:59AM (#1843107)
I suppose while designing the OS, they felt by 1995 they would have released many new versions past the Lisa. And they were correct.
Re:Stop the Signature File Insanity on Monday October 18, 2010 @02:59PM (#1804660)
My signature is company mandated, was done by our marketing department (along with all email signatures in our company) and includes 6 lines of contact information, an image of the company logo, and then a disclaimer paragraph (which only gets attached to external email). I don't know how prevalent this is, but many people may (like myself) have no control over the content of their signatures.
Re:Bottled Water on Tuesday August 10, 2010 @05:15PM (#1592974)
99% of bottled water drinkers agree that other people should drink less bottled water
Re:Best Worst Website Ever on Wednesday June 09, 2010 @10:00AM (#1416984)
Perhaps the new web meme should be "Animated Gifs are cruise control for cool"
They got some bad press for the pricing move. I don't blame them for trying to generate some good press out of it.
Re:An apology... on Monday April 19, 2010 @10:58PM (#1278491)
I hadn't heard about this incident until I read this link, and had to google Gray Powell. This, at least in my case, caused some more attention to Gizmodo, rather than less.
He has to spend 5 to 15 minutes everyday hiding followers? Does he follow that many new people in buzz everyday (automatically or implicitly) or are they not staying hidden? That estimate seems large.
Re:StackOverflow.com vs.Experts-Exchange.com on Monday March 22, 2010 @12:36PM (#1210705)
one of the early stated goals of Stack Overflow was to be a better version of Experts Exchange. It looks like they are accomplishing that goal, in terms of users switching (which of course, the graph does not prove but does seem to suggest).
Re:Why Favicons Rule the Internet on Friday March 19, 2010 @12:05PM (#1204420)
Another example of branding. I quite like them though, as it is much easier to visually identify my bookmarks quickly
I believe this is simply to protect them from unauthorized radio broadcasts of their games.
Re:Why Finding a Development Job Online Sucks on Thursday February 18, 2010 @12:29AM (#1133488)
Every job I have ever had I have gotten either through personal contacts or by sending my resume to a company that I was interested in. It wasn't that people were doing me favors, its just that it put me in the right place at the right time and that was much more effective than browsing online ads. I have read statistics that say most hires are made through personal contacts, otherwise known as "networking"
Re:Learn CSS Positioning on Monday February 15, 2010 @02:19PM (#1127260)
I read this tutorial a long time ago for a basic app I was working on and found it quite helpful. It was my first brush with css positioning
Re:We Hold Twitter For Ransom For $100 Billion Dollars on Friday September 25, 2009 @09:24AM (#843409)
Valuations usually are calculated in a way to benefit whomever is doing the calculating.

That said, a company is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If Twitter (or anyone) can create the perception that their company is worth x, and then sell it for x, then it really was worth x.

Re:Ways Marketing Weasels Will Try to Manipulate You on Friday September 11, 2009 @12:55PM (#817670)
I remember when this used to be a blog about programming (you can debate the value), but the last several posts have been mostly about blogging and marketing.
Re:Computer Hacking Made Easy on Friday August 14, 2009 @02:46PM (#763580)
There have been script kiddies for a long time. This sounds like more of the same.
Re:The next meltdown will come in 2012 on Tuesday August 11, 2009 @09:33AM (#755147)
Wow. Predicting a Great Depression 2 leading to a second American revolution. Overreact much?

They have a point about easy credit and debt creating a bubbles, but I think they might take the conclusion to the extreme. A good general rule to go by is "Things are never as bad as people tell you, or as good as people tell you"

Re:Nobody cares about your website. on Monday August 10, 2009 @09:19AM (#752788)
I think it typically boils down to the following: "We spent quite a bit of money on the website/newsletter redesign that we need to justify. The big bosses want to make sure we promote it"
Re:How People Can Get You To Do What They Want on Friday August 07, 2009 @10:31AM (#747616)
Very interesting. I was just going off the ethical arguments and data raised from a course I took while at the university where we studied the Milgram experiment.

I guess that's what I get for just going along with someone who was an "authority" on the subject.

Re:How People Can Get You To Do What They Want on Friday August 07, 2009 @09:25AM (#747515)
Experiments like the Milgram experiment would not be considered ethical today because of the mental effect it has on the test subjects afterward (feeling bad about themselves for not stopping). I'm undecided if that's good or not - It just seems to have exposed a truth about human nature, which remains true even if you don't expose it. But, if it a lasting psychological impact on the test subjects... that doesn't seem desirable.

The point of the article is correct from a business standpoint as well as a moral one. Too often we fail to question processes and procedures because "that's the way its always been done."

The bottom line is usually "You should keep in house what can gain you a competitive advantage (your core business), other stuff can be outsourced if it saves costs".

That's an oversimplification, but it sums up what the general thinking should be.

Re:The day pain died on Monday June 08, 2009 @02:23PM (#647730)
Many times it seems culture or taboos or tradition seem to keep us from doing what's best. I've seen it in corporate culture in seemingly making the right decision for the company and I've seen it in life, too. People tend to resist change.
Re:Real Programmers... on Friday May 29, 2009 @01:07PM (#632357)
I didn't mean to imply that C and C++ were from a bygone era. Even Fortran is still used today, (though of course C and C++ are still in very wide use).

I just meant to draw a parallel about those who learned to program after the era of mainframes and terminals, on operating systems like Unix, Windows, and Mac OS but before the Web really became a true platform and how they would feel about web programmers. I included Pascal because it was discussed in the article extensively.

Re:Real Programmers... on Friday May 29, 2009 @12:01PM (#632272)
Seems to parallel how some of the Pascal/C/C++ era programmers feel about Python/Ruby/PHP web developers of today.
