My perspective on consciousness is not as a single function unique to humans, but as a process of learning that emerges from coherent interaction at all scales of observers. I think the reason humans have developed the kind of consciousness we generally observe is due to our slow development combined with the physical architecture to support the processing and growth. While many animals learn to master their mechanics and survival early, humans are slow and take time to develop. I often hear people argue that humans are incredible at learning, but I’d argue it being the opposite. We are terrible at learning, and it is what enables us to have the time to observe and learn from coherent information at scales inaccessible to other observers.

I align with your thinking.

I find the question of the existence of god a nonquestion. Invented looking for an answer in a space without one.

I think it stems from our incredible ability to learn, and struggle to unlearn.

However, I think we are on the verge of having an understanding of the universe in which learning will be seen as a fundamental part of physical reality.

Where gods are to the people who have them as real as they think they are. Only that they are real in the space of their minds, and no where else.

Given this, I think we’ll soon see the gap between our incoherent internal reality and coherent external reality narrow.

Yesh. Will do that as well.
It looked like they were using the Prusa I3 MK3S.
Re:How to guarantee continued operation for an SaaS startup on Friday November 15, 2013 @08:54AM (#6739380)
Everything depends on configuration. Redis can be very durable/reliable if configured accordingly.

Premature optimization or not. We care about the experience and want it to be as good as possible. /R

Thanks. Would be happy really if we got it working with CloudFlare! /R

I actually looked at Fastly just a few days ago. Unfortunately their custom SSL fees are a bit high. But seems really nice and will definitely do a write-up if we try them.

Pingdom's response time report is really nice. We also used LoadImpact to test it against "flash mobs" :)

I wish we could use CloudFront. Unfortunately they charge a bit for custom SSL ($600/zone/mo). Not that fun for a startup. Are you also using that? /R

What is your experience? :) What CDN are you using for your startup today? /Robin
OP here.

Point taken!

Payment processing, social login and welcome/confirmation emails is on top of our list!

The "launching soon" page is thought as a nice 1st step for people that haven't launched their app yet but still want to get users into UserApp. But we're not going to become like another LaunchRock, so no need to worry :)

Ask HN: What services should be included as UserApp add-ons?

We recently launched UserApp (www.userapp.io), a User Management SaaS, and have now begun working on add-on functionality. The question: If you were using UserApp, then what services would you see as "must have" for your business? Some services that we are looking on integrating:1: Sync users to newsletter/email services (MailChimp, Campaign Monitor, Customer.io)2: Payment processing (Stripe,...

Ironic indeed. Must suck to be statuspage.io right now.
Re:Bitbucket Offline on Wednesday October 30, 2013 @10:22AM (#6640672)
Has gone up and down for me the last 30 minutes. But it's fully down now.
We launched UserApp (www.userapp.io) three days ago here on HN. Related thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6500787

I totally agree. Don't know how we could miss putting it up there. I will see to it that this gets the attention it needs on the front page. Thanks! :)

Nice. I have subscribed to your mailing list. Will be interesting to see how you approach it :)
Re:Cloud-based User Management for Web Apps on Saturday October 05, 2013 @11:41AM (#6500979)
We are actually using Redis and have configured it for high consistency/durability.

OP here.

Exactly because of this reason, you should use us. We have built a low-latency HA platform. And it's our core business. This means that we will do it the best way possible.

I can understand your concerns, but you could try us out on a smaller project to begin with. Or wait until we launch our licensed version which will allow you to install the system in your own environment. I.e. keeping the data safe with you and under your control :)

But it might cost a little bit more than $9 :)

Then you don't live in Sweden. Beer here is expensive :) :(
Re:Cloud-based User Management for Web Apps on Saturday October 05, 2013 @11:14AM (#6500895)
OP here.

This is something that we are very aware of. We only have good intentions and want our users to feel 100% secure with us. If you don't, please let us know how we can change that! :) We don't have it now, but we will make it possible to export all of the data in UserApp at any time.

Regarding security and privacy we have written a section about it here: https://help.userapp.io/customer/portal/topics/550128-securi...

Additionally, everything is SSL and passwords are stored using bcrypt. And we will make it possible to login using 3rd party providers later (OAuth). From a personal perspective, we will run this ship to the end of the world if we have to. Since we're developing quite a few other services (www.amail.io to mention one) we are also basing all our services on UserApp.

We just launched UserApp after 9 months of hard work. Please try it out and let us know what you think :)
