Also built-in support for other data store backends e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, ...see https://docs.prediction.io/system/anotherdatastore/ since 0.9.3 release.
We wrote this blog post about Meerkat to showcase some of the features you can build using PredictionIO (Open source Machine Learning server).

My 1st guess was forcing everyone to download and use Messenger
Ideally open-source. Surprised MongoDB 2.2+ is such an issue but thanks for the feedback and suggestions. We'll look into PostgreSQL, Riak and RethinkDB.
Video was by the good folk at http://www.wyzowl.com/ I am pretty sure it was a genuine voiceover but might be wrong!
Do you think Firefox OS will have a significant impact on the demand and therefore supply of HTML5 games and other apps?
Best fake recommendations ever! But yeah we make the assumption the developer and their app (food delivery or otherwise) has some data (users, items, actions) on which to build a model. Otherwise you won't get very far...

Thanks! Some of our tutorials have test datasets (e.g., MovieLens) if you want to try it out - http://docs.prediction.io/current/tutorials/movie-recommenda...

Not so familiar with Keen IO. Looks like analytics-as-a-service for collecting and visualizing data. We're focused on helping developers build predictive features like recommendation, discovery, etc.

Yup. We're definitely committed to open source. Source is all up on GitHub https://github.com/predictionio

Sounds like nReduce.com but don't think it worked out. Agree with gaborcselle that bonding would not be the same without meeting in person. Also cohort effects are diminished with smaller rolling cohorts. Starting and finishing something at the same time is a big deal.

Think about your best friends. I would hazard a guess they are probably from school and college. Now compare to friends you've made taking MOOCs (i.e., remote) and at work (i.e., rolling cohorts). Over simplified but you get the idea.

Re:Cloudera acquisition: It's a Myrrix(cle) on Friday July 19, 2013 @07:07AM (#6069397)
Wow, that was quick! Smart move by Cloudera. If any existing users are looking for an open-source alternative to Myrrix for a scalable recommender system build on Hadoop/Mahout check out http://prediction.io

Looks like P(K) are closing their public API on December 5th. We at TappingStone are more than happy to help any users looking for alternative prediction APIs - https://www.tappingstone.com - or e-mail [email protected] with any questions.
Thanks for clarifying!

I thought that may be the case now that they operate the mini-Seedcamps and Seedcamp week with investment happening year-round.

Look forward to seeing more from Seed-DB.

As Jed notes in his post and on the site there is clearly work to be done (this is an MVP) but I think this is a great tool for founders to compare accelerator programs.

They all have the same spiel about mentoring and funding but this gives some real clarity to the murky waters of seed accelerators. Beyond the top-tier (YC, TechStars, Seedcamp [IMHO]) it is hard to know the value of some of these programmes.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to see AngelList and Linkedin data integrated ;)

Re:Comparing Startup Ecosystems: SV, London, NYC on Wednesday April 11, 2012 @05:51AM (#3826713)
As pointed out by @sakai I am surprised there is no mention of sample bias. I wonder if the results where adjusted to account for over- / under- representation from certain geographies, especially non-english speaking (e.g., Beijing) who probably never heard of SGP, much less used their Startup Compass.

Otherwise all good. By far the most detailed comparison I have seen of different locations and beats the pointless VC dollars per capita argument being touted at conferences and all over the interweb.

I guess at the end of the day it is a personal or team decision depending on many factors (connections, market, investors, family & friends ...etc.) but the more information to make that decision the better.

Re:"White hat" Facebook hacker gets 8 months in jail on Friday February 17, 2012 @02:39PM (#3604676)
[Without knowing the full details of the case or proceedings] I don't see how putting this, clearly quite gifted, young person in jail for 8 months is going to help him, Facebook or anyone else for that matter.

Surely, there must be other options except jail?! Maybe some form of community service where he would then be an asset rather than a cost to the general public. If he can infiltrate Facebook, I am sure there are government sites and systems with much more sensitive information that he could be testing and identifying security threats.

Eight months hard time, plus the stigma of a criminal record, just seem like such a waste.
