News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

That sounds like a neat idea. Reminds me on SoundFont.

But isn't Midi the equivalent to SVG, Wave the equivalent to BMP, Flac to PNG and MP3 the one to JPEG?

Re:33 Beautiful Open-Source Icon Sets on Thursday August 01, 2019 @08:54AM (#20583300)
Not all of the presented icon sets are Open-Sourced. Some are, some are free and for some you have to pay with information about you like your email address. So the title sounds nice but it is just wrong.

Another good usage for Stylus.
Plus it is not behind a pay wall.

I'm very happy with mu4e in combination with isync.

Didn't get any useful content. Goddesses bless script blockers.
Re:Mozilla Announces Experimental Partnership with ProtonVPN on Tuesday October 23, 2018 @04:55AM (#18281815)
Why Proton VPN and not something privacy friendly? As ProtonVPN like NordVPN is run by Tesonet is has the same issues.

Why does Mozilla trust in Tesonet and why should their users do?

Re:Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish Released on Saturday October 20, 2018 @07:06AM (#18262710)
My best friend. She saw me being happy to use Linux and that I do everything on it she did on Windows before.

Of course it still needs an opened mindset to use Linux but its disadvantages in some use cases.

She is using OpenSuse.

Re:Guide to email in Emacs using mu and mu4e on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @06:05AM (#18174585)
For rendering HTML emails I use either shr or w3m. To get it more readable I make the text area smaller with writeroom-mode/olivetti-mode in the mu4e-view-mode-hook. But both modes apply just after opening an email a second time.

Do you have any hint?

Re:Guide to email in Emacs using mu and mu4e on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @05:57AM (#18174564)
With `pkill $(pgrep mu)` or even with `pkill mu` you can kill mutt and any mu$ process as well.

`pkill -x mu` matches the whole name without substrings.

Re:Guide to email in Emacs using mu and mu4e on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @05:49AM (#18174530)
Agree with using Isync. Notmuch lacks the backward synchronization to the IMAP server and to another mail client then notmuch.

I primarily use mu4e but want to see changes on my mobile as well as on any remote computer using a web client in a browser.

As far as I know notmuch can just be synchronized to another notmuch instance.

Good for you. To save power and use smaller machines should always be an option. Indexing saves much resources here.
Re:Hardening macOS on Sunday September 30, 2018 @07:57AM (#18105790)
Recommending Google's and Cloudflare's DNS is not privacy friendly at all. Even when you use an VPN and push all your domain name requests to either or.
Re:Google, but for colors on Thursday August 30, 2018 @04:07AM (#17874871)
Doesn't work out of the box with tracking protection in browsers enabled. So I don't see any color and I guess I don't have to.
Nice afford. Why exactly it is not OpenSource yet?
The best comment seen on Reddit is "it does one thing well, it's a perfect Lisp interpreter."

Re:Pass: A standard Unix password manager on Saturday July 22, 2017 @02:03PM (#14828433)
Not at all. While Masterpassword does not save any passwords but generates it based on some unique parameters live - pass stores passwords and notes encrypted with GPG in a git repository.

The list differences to LastPass is long.

Pass is OpenSource. Pass doesn't store your information on anybody else's computer by default. Pass has not first party browser plugin and is therefore not open to attack through browser plugin holes.

On the other hand you control everything by yourself including batch updating your passwords. And there's no online service.

Re:Way Cooler tiling window manager on Sunday July 02, 2017 @06:06PM (#14684596)
Did you try [chunkwm](https://github.com/koekeishiya/chunkwm) yet? It's the successor of kwm which I have tried on macOS. Mainly I use i3 at Linux but for some work I have to use macOS as well. The only native apps which feel Linux like are iTerm and Emacs (the mac port) because it's possible to suppress the window decorations. Every other native app takes for a real tiling wm too much space with its Titel bar and other frames.
Re:Horcrux: A Password Manager for Paranoids on Monday June 19, 2017 @01:08PM (#14588517)
1. In pass everything is encrypted but you have to give names to each gpg encrypted password file.

2. Right. I use rofi-pass on Linux which fills in the selected password or other login data without any clipboard action.

3. True. Never thought about this but sounds clever.

4. Same answer as in 2.

Plus I have a good password history through the git commits. Of course I push it just in my local network.

And I use more then just one password store. And inside you can folder based decide who can decrypt the passwords and who not.

Me too. Started with some GUI editors like Text Mate and Gedit; came to ST3 (bought a license); tried Atom; got convinced to VIM and use Emacs with evil now.
