Re:The Rise of Judgement over Technical Skill on Monday June 02, 2025 @10:05AM (#44159000)
Chap. CCCLXIV. — On the Judgment of Painters.

When the work is equal to the knowledge and judgment of the painter, it is a bad sign; and when it surpasses the judgment, it is still worse, as is the case with those who wonder at having succeeded so well. But when the judgment surpasses the work, it is a perfectly good sign ; and the young painter who possesses that rare disposition, will, no doubt, arrive at great perfection. He will produce few works, but they will be such as to fix the admiration of every beholder.

Patrick Tierney's "The Highest Altar" [1] develops a very similar thesis, with first-hand experience by the author.

Wikipedia provides some material on child sacrifice by the Incas in e.g. [2] and [3].

The behavior of the United Kingdom looks incoherent: it wants to become a surveillance state [1], but without using cameras manufactured in China, on the grounds that China is a surveillance state.

Re:Protonmail Recommended Browsers on Thursday August 25, 2022 @11:09AM (#32594696)
Were you using Tor Browser ? From Switzerland, I can create free Proton accounts by solving a captcha, if I'm using Safari or Firefox. But if I use Tor on the same computer, the only option is to enter a phone number.
Re:Updated Proton, Unified Protection on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @03:17PM (#31509229)
No, I didn't. And I just tried with Tor Browser, but the captcha option is not available.
Re:Updated Proton, Unified Protection on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @12:36PM (#31506890)
Between 2019 and 2020, I've created a few free one-time ProtonMail accounts, which I used for creating throw-away Apple IDs.

In fact, I just created one to verify. It's still possible. See for yourself:

user: [email protected]

pass: testdonotuseforseriousstuff

All I had to do was to solve a captcha with bicycles in order to prove I was human. And the dialog for recovery e-mail / phone had a "Maybe later" button.

I live in Switzerland, maybe the impossibility of anonymous account creation is a legal issue in some countries ?

The conductor took your passports for the cross-border check, since you'd likely be soundly asleep at the time when it would happen. You can view this as a service.

Re:Photographic Reference Scale (2019) on Thursday July 22, 2021 @08:32AM (#27918084)
508 pixels/inch = 200 pixels/cm, exactly. The resolution unit in PNG is either the meter, or it is unspecified. 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 25.4 * 2 = 50.8. 508 is close enough to 600, and 600 dpi is a resolution commonly found in desktop printers.

If you've worked with PNG files under Photoshop, you may have noticed that a picture saved with exactly 72 dpi has 72.009 dpi when you close it and open it again. Using an integer multiple of 254 for the dpi prevents such a drift.

Re:Sensible macOS Defaults on Friday March 19, 2021 @12:13PM (#26515084)
This is a very useful list. Information on mac OS defaults is not easy to discover.
In backward Wallis, I've been receiving a single folded A3 page for at least 5 years. And since last year, I could even snapshot the substantiating documents with my mobile and attach them to my digital tax form if I wanted to.
That was my rationale for voting "no". The task of deciding who is swiss and who isn't shouldn't be entrusted to some AI running on a facebook server.
