Re:Happy 20th Birthday, Django on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @09:15AM (#44570811)
I remember when Django first came out, and I loved using it. For old time sakes, I went back to their website and they still have the tool bar on the right side, which I use to love. Happy birthday Django!
it’s like someone saw Tor and said "but what if we removed all the safeguards?"
fwiw, I tried something similar about 5–10 years ago. I wasn’t using LLMs like the abstract here suggests, and honestly, I’m not sure how you'd act on a signal fast enough with them. When I gave it a shot, there was some slight predictive value, but in the end it felt like noise and gambling, so I moved on.
Re:Mullvad Leta on Wednesday May 28, 2025 @12:50PM (#44117994)
This would've been a great product 10 years ago. I've unapologetically not had to use a search engine in almost a year (or at least can count on 1 hand having to use it) since GPT models have come out.
Mexico has so many greater problems to discuss than a few people learning the ancient tongue. 2 days ago a beauty influencer was shot dead on a live stream, and female (and male) mayors have been gunned down regularly. I couldn't care less about what they're speaking over there, I hope they take care of their basic human rights and giving their citizens dignity first.

I wonder when the Perimeter Institute will begin to get more name recognition. Some of the top PhD graduates from US R5 universities (and now assistant professors) have gone through there and have done phenomenal in their career.

wow, TIL. Can't believe I've done nearly 40 circles around our sun and never knew about WSL/2.
Speaking from personal experience, many director-level and above positions at Intel, especially in growth related areas are filled through nepotism and professional connections. I've never seen a headline about Intel’s decline and thought, 'Wow, how could that happen?'
Re:Ask HN: Do you still use Search Engines? on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @03:45PM (#43625733)
The only time I use search engines now is when I’m screen sharing and feel obligated not to show my five different ChatGPT tabs. I glance over the links and feign interest, "Oh, that’s great..."
Re:MonkeysPaw – a prompt-driven web framework in Ruby on Monday April 07, 2025 @08:11AM (#43610383)
It's been about 15 years since I've worked with RoR, but my favorite aspect of ruby was and will always be the library names. Shout out to factory_girl which I found out this morning was unforunately renamed to factory_bot
I've been following this news for the past couple of weeks-- in essence your statement is what they are hypothesizing, and that the "something at the center that unites the two poles" is that we might be within a black hole. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole_cosmology for the curious.
Every time I see something pertaining to a pomodoro timer, I'm reminded of interviewing with a YC founder in downtown san mateo in the early 2010s (he was working on websockets + slide deck/prezi-like tech iirc), and half our interview consisted of him hyping up this technique. The company went under within a year, and I could never respect this technique afterwards
I too wonder about anomalous ionizations first thing in the mornings
Re:White Hat Hackers Expose Iridium Satellite Security Flaws on Thursday February 13, 2025 @12:18PM (#43038467)
I was once offered an engineering manager position at iridium (which i discussed here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41748519)-- that entire company is a race to reduce the bottom line. They offered me (an engineering manager to 5 engineers) a lower salary than I was offered as a new grad. Also their talent pipeline is quite stale, most of the engineers on my prospective team were at the org for 10-20 years. For such an interesting aspect of technology, it's ashame they can't attract more talent, such an untapped market low earth orbit satellite networks are...
Re:Ask HN: Physics PhD at Stanford or Berkeley on Monday February 10, 2025 @11:22AM (#43002022)
Stanford! My best friend did his PhD from there and is now a tenured prof. Everyone i know from Berkeley is at best an adjunct.
You know the wierd thing is - I've never used Meta AI. I've never thought of using it. The only product of FB i use is whatsapp, however I've not seen/heard any of my friends using Meta AI for FB,IG,Whatsapp. I really don't understand what their ROI here is...
Re:Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs on Friday January 10, 2025 @06:03PM (#42661353)
I'm not going to review the above, as I've had to much of DEI corp talk over the past decade. Given that, it’s likely no surprise that I’m glad to see it phased out. Throughout my experience, I witnessed underqualified engineers navigating FAANG companies due to DEI initiatives, accumulating significant wealth despite contributing little to released projects. I believe its departure is overdue.
Re:Why the powerful may be more likely to cheat on Monday December 09, 2024 @07:31PM (#42372265)
I married into a wealthy-ish family, and this was probably my biggest disappointment. In my anecdotal experience, wealthier individuals lack humanity for others, are quite selfish, and lie through their teeth to make things go their way.

Candidly, I was a centrist before marriage, but I've become a strong advocate for socialism (and against late stage capitalism). The skills you need to be affluent (barring exceptions like FAANG founders) are skills no one should really cultivate.

Re:T-Mobile Engineers Spotted Hackers Running Commands on Routers on Wednesday November 27, 2024 @09:23AM (#42256312)
I don't normally post, however, this struck a nerve because I worked for a competitor who's routers were all either accessed through a single username/password combo or the default password. Surprised this isn't more common smh.
Re:Software Engineer Pay Heatmap Across the US on Thursday October 10, 2024 @12:55PM (#41800807)
for TC?
yeah I meant Iridium pays pennies on the dollar -
Hearing about Iridium reminded me of how excited I was to take on a job managing 5 engineers for them, until they offered me a base salary of $135,000 in Phoenix. They work on incredibly cool technology—I'm bummed I had to pass it up to work for some garbage web-focused tech company becayse Iridium pays pennies on the dollar to their engineering department.
yeah I'm surprised that anyone didn't see this coming. The amount of times i've heard, "this is all our customer data, perform <xyz transformation> on it," I would have about $5.
I lived in the Bay Area for about 30 years, so here's my (probably biased) opinion. The biggest issue is the lack of community, and in my experience, this is due to the high turnover of residents. From my high school graduating class of 400, fewer than 100 are still in the community; everyone else has moved to Florida, Phoenix, Austin, etc. You can't encourage long-term planning (good public education policies, systematic reductions in the drivers of crime, etc.) if the community changes every two decades. My personal opinion is that the Bay Area won't improve because everyone is out to get 'theirs' and then leave. While I do miss the weather, the lack of humidity, and, honestly, a more educated population, I believe raising children in a strong community is more important. So, I'm more than happy with the trade-offs for a better overall quality of life.
Connecticut - I've never felt safer walking around at 3 am and I've made more friends in the last 2 months (without trying) than I probably have in the last 6 years of living in the bay area.
My ex's father was held up near his home with a knife - OPD never came after the initial call was filed.
Will they though? Crime enforcement in the bay area is a joke - from alameda county into SF. I'm so happy to have moved out and into a state with actual community engagement and accountability.
