The Pine64 SBCs look to be good choices. They don't have WiFi, but fortunately I don't need WiFi for this.

Perhaps the continual raising awareness of problems is a key part of progress.

> All we need is to build distributed systems that work. That means decentralized bulk activity, hierarchical regulation.

XMPP fits this definition.

Bulk activity occurs via decentralized federation.

Regulation occurs via yearly updated XMPP compliance suites. https://xmpp.org/about/compliance-suites/

TIL. Do you have any links that go into more detail about these differences?
Re:Tvix: We Are Rewriting Nix on Thursday December 02, 2021 @01:43AM (#29413232)
I don't know enough about Nix internals to know how much of a problem this is, or the right way to improve it.

However, it's good to see an ecosystem forming around the derivation data type, with the possibility of reuse across projects that use derivations.

Good stuff!

I'd be interested to hear a perspective from the Nix and Guix authors.

I suspect many, perhaps even most, are aware of the bias they are exposed to.

I don't expect I'm particularly resistant to it.

I am keen to learn more about what I can do.

An alternative might be to focus on local community matters. I think this is common in practice.

Re:Facebook reverses Kyle Rittenhouse policy on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @11:48PM (#29412668)
It's a clear case of censorship.

In censorsing they might have amplified the story, but this amplification only occurred after the matter/case was decided. That is too late.

> If you decentralize you will end up with a media for each particular group, and you will have less engagement as you are only discussing with people you agree with.

This already happens with centralization, as the OP raised. Multiple groups at least offers the choice.

Re:Facebook reverses Kyle Rittenhouse policy on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @09:55PM (#29411976)
The question is, if media centralization continues, what evidence/perspectives could have been removed from the public sphere, and what impact could that have on impartiality?

Tech has the potential to decentralize power. Alas...

Re:Facebook reverses Kyle Rittenhouse policy on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @09:52PM (#29411958)
I fully accept that FB is free to run itself how it pleases.

That said, it's clear they are not in a position to act as a neutral platform for civic discourse.

I try to support technologies and platforms that provide a voice to all. Decentralized over centralized.

I try to curate my own list of sources, rather than rely on third-party curation.

How else can I ensure a healthy and diverse information perspective?

> You can live here for the rest of your life carefully achieving satisfying challenges

"rest of your [professional] life" suggests at least 30 years.

How confident can you be predicting 30 years in the future? Note that 30 years ago was 1991.

Re:Google Chromium, sans integration with Google on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @04:15AM (#29390359)
Yeah...

Guix does not distribute Firefox and instead distributes GNU Icecat, which comes with the unremovable libreJS and an extension to make UPS's site work without JavaScript.

Uhh... thanks

Or, more typically, the binary is built your distribution.
Re:Ask HN: Jaded about the internet? on Sunday November 28, 2021 @03:22PM (#29372595)
I'm jaded about the Internet.

https://www.eff.org/cyberspace-independence didn't last.

The web is no longer "surfed". The web is an escalator of sanitised material, surveilled and stateful.

On the plus side, the web is now used by billions of people to solve real problems. That's nice, but it's not a place of exploration for me anymore.

Re:Tell HN: GitHub is down again on Saturday November 27, 2021 @04:17PM (#29363620)
Helm might have info documentation, available offline within Emacs.

Try `M-x info-apropos` and type "helm".

Info docs form a tree: press '^' to go up a node, 'n' and 'p' to go forward and back on same level, '[' and ']' to go forward/back a page like a book.
