I want so badly to like Radiolab, but honestly I feel like it's produced by ADHD'ers, for ADHD'ers.

Hell, I feel like it gives me ADHD just listening.

The site offers to analyze your composer.json file, but doesn't seem to identify even popular libs like Monolog and Doctrine
tl;dr Nope, although Mongo is fun to ride around in the backyard.

And the general, consistent feeling of well-being and attentiveness is seductive - it makes you feel like it'll always be there, without any maintenance.

For many people, this is not true. Look at how common a second-act career has become.

Most of the reviewer's comments aren't about anything new in 18.04. It's like he didn't see any of the 17.* releases?

My Plea for Sane Package Management

I've been sitting on this idea for a while, but it came up in a Twitter discussion over the weekend. After thinking more about it, it's time we had a serious discussion about how to get pkg mgmt out of the FWB stage and into a long-term relationship :)What we've got now (in different ways, with different flaws) across basically all modern languages is something that can work but is plagued...

Re:Many packages suddenly disappeared on Saturday January 06, 2018 @10:47PM (#16089020)
Was just discussing this elsewhere online. Package management is broken (or incomplete, depending on your viewpoint). What's needed IMO is the following:

1. Allow a single package file, including multiple clauses (or sub-files, whatever) for different languages. Let me manage my Angular front-end and Flask back-end in the same file. A single CLI tool as well - Composer and Bower aren't all that different.

2. Be the trusted broker, with e.g. MD5 checking, virus scanning, some kind of certification/badging/web of trust thing. Let developers know if it's listed, it's been vetted in some way.

3. Allow client-side caching, but also act as a cache/proxy fetch for package retrieval. That way, if Github or source site is down, the Internet doesn't come to a screeching halt. I see the value of Satis, but it's a whole additional tool to solve just one part of this one problem.

4. Server-side dependency solver. Cache the requests and give instant answers for similar requests. All sorts of value-adds in analytics here, made more valuable by crossing language boundaries.

5. Act as an advocate for good semver, as part of the vetting above.

NOTE: These features are not all-or-nothing, I believe there's value from implementing each one on its own. Also note that nothing here should lock people into one provider for these services. There's a market to be made here.

Re:What MongoDB got right (2015) on Tuesday November 28, 2017 @09:16AM (#15797448)
Doesn't Postgres do everything that MongoDB does? I still see MongoDB's popularity coming primarily from ignorance about what PG can do.

Why does this link go directly to a sign-up page?

Their demo video is cringe-worthy. I understand that you're also marketing to non-technical folks, but it's like a film from grade school.
Re:Stop the Daily Standup Meeting on Friday May 05, 2017 @09:46AM (#14273362)
Ugh. Provocative, radical idea that is founded upon overly-simple, faulty assumptions. To think that the author's three categories for teams are the only three, and that standup communication only takes the forms he describes is just hubris, and leads to dangerous advice.
Re:Ask HN: What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10? on Friday March 31, 2017 @04:48PM (#14008030)
- FLAVOR: Ubuntu Desktop

- HEADLINE: Add specific websites or help data (e.g. Zeal) into Unity Search

- DESCRIPTION: I would love to use Unity to search for API definitions for Angular, JS, Lodash, PHP, Postgres, etc...

- ROLE/AFFILIATION: CTO for a software product company. Use 16.10 all day every day.

Re:Ask HN: Insider history of the demise of Kodak? on Monday July 18, 2016 @10:21AM (#12115166)
I worked a summer job in 1987 or 1988, doing 9cm glass-plate manufacturing. The main application for these plates was apparently U2/SR-71-style high-altitude photography.

Of football games, I'm sure. They always told us they could blow up the exposure to that size, anyway :)

Except when the retirement and health benefits of 10% of the entire city is eliminated, so that the CEO can still get his $5M "performance bonus". That's not exactly efficient use of capital.

Yeah, basically all along Ridge Road from Lake Ave to Mt. Read.

Remember the coal pile they used to maintain?

Do you want to work for a company / team that pre-judges based on the acronyms in your technology list?

This is garbage. The article is 62 years old - exactly how far along this "trend to Socialism" are we at this point?
