Re:Software Architecture Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them on Thursday December 21, 2023 @11:11PM (#38730850)
i used to work with these so called "software architects". they didnt ship any code but wrote articles like this at length that everyone pretended to read.

Architecture of open source applications, which has a free book version available on their site, has that info on some other large desktop applications .
Re:Zillow seeks to sell 7k homes for $2.8B after flipping halt on Tuesday November 02, 2021 @02:20PM (#29085308)
I'm a mid 30s renter also flush with cash, living in a high COL area.

I have found a happy (to me) medium - I invest all of it diversified across low to high risk assets (muni bonds, i bonds, tips, mREITs, dividend stocks, stablecoins, growth stocks), and at this point just the interest/dividends (NOT counting unrealized gains!) almost cover even my crazy rent (3500/month, for the house we are renting which is valued at about 1.5m). I just don't have the time or the energy for a house. Also a house doesn't MAKE anything other than provide shelter. Psychologically it doesn't make much sense to me to "invest" in a single house, tied to one area, such a large % of my networth. My friends bought houses recently, and even the "flips" turned out to be fixer/uppers. The supply is so bad right now you can really get burned.

Once the supply improves - and really this means most of the government distortions disappear, I would reconsider. By government distortions i mean specifically 0) stimulus checks 1) extra unemployment (bonus monthly $, extra time, and expanding benefits to people that would not have otherwise been covered) 2) mortgage forbearance programs 3) student loan forbearance 4) super low rates. i agree at one point these distortions were necessary when we were all hunkered down and hospitals were being overrun, but we are far from that these days.

Massively, they did, yes. By both injecting money directly and taking away the burden of repayments. And this unemployment boost that expired is just one small piece of equation:

1 - unemployment boost 2 - stimulus payments 3 - extending unemployment to workers who would normally be ineligible (contractors etc) 4 - eviction moratorium 5 - mortgage forbearance programs 6 - student loans forbearance 7 - locally available , utilities payments pauses 8 - ppp grants

Re:The Black Tax on Sunday March 07, 2021 @04:57PM (#26380172)
Victim mentality on full display.
OP should have said "What you will find is that SOMETIMES people are friendly, as long as you look like them (white), WHICH IS THE SAME THING AS IN BIG CITIES."

I can't believe the backlash here - surely generalizing ALL OF MIDWEST to be racist is the wrong thing to do?

talent, patents, less competition
That’s honestly a great market based idea and more in spirit of what h1-b is meant to do.
Re:Rents are dropping across the US on Thursday June 18, 2020 @12:38PM (#23564843)
that's just one side of the possible story. if housing does drop, other sectors are probably dropping as well. supply might increase as over-leveraged "investors" need to get liquid. that "army of millennials" will feel much less secure at that point so a large portion may decide now is not the time.
Re:Google’s Dominance Is No Longer a Sure Thing on Sunday June 02, 2019 @02:28PM (#20077114)
"a few different software packages all were erroneously flagged as malicious by Chrome" is that something you could sue them for?
Searching by language would be cool too
Is the bit about reading the game through an api true? Earlier iterations of this same rl based agent that played Atari games would read just raw pixels not an api.
What is he up to now?
Lyft has a car-seat option

Nice project! Good timing too - I track my portfolio on google finance and they are turning that off in November.

co-founders of Lyft met online.
Re:A Newbie’s Guide to Cassandra on Wednesday September 06, 2017 @04:26PM (#15186855)
Agreed. If anyone has recommended resources for someone coming from from SQL world and wanting to learn more about databases like Cassandra and HBase space, please share!
Hi Harj,

I didn't see an answer to this on yr FAQ for candidates, and I think it's pretty important from privacy standpoint: Do candidates have total control over which companies you will reach out to on their behalf?

Re:How to Interview Engineers on Wednesday June 28, 2017 @12:48PM (#14655743)
how is the quality of the candidates coming thru the triplebyte pipeline compared to recruiters, or direct site applications?

I'm considering using triplebyte, but also want to control where my applications are sent to.

OpenFin claims to have remediated the memory issues of electron somewhat.

and someone like this smart person in your example would now be highly unlikely to get an h1b visa with the current lottery system. once you introduce a lottery, it's no longer about hard to find skills, it's about how can you churn out most applications to win most visas. i'll be looking for the elimination of the lottery system in any proposed fixes.
It sounds like you did the on-campus program at GT, so you took time off work to complete it. It's hard to argue with the fact that losing the wages to do that is a lot of missed opportunity.

However.... I think majority of people that take OMSCS (I am in my 2nd semester) and this new OMSA program do so part time while still maintaining their fulltime jobs and families.

Also, why the throwaway?

Re:The Memory App – Instant personalized memory recall on Saturday December 24, 2016 @09:38AM (#13249914)
unfortunately not everything can be solved with an app. i highly recommend the coursera 'learning about learning' course for some deep insight on how our brains work and how to maintain and improve them.
Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2016? on Thursday December 22, 2016 @02:46PM (#13239771)
I recommend Stormlight to everyone new to fantasy. Such interesting yet easy to read books. With Sanderson writing, reading is fun.
I think about the future and get excited about technology and the types of things you can build and contribute to if you know how to code (e.g. block chain, deep learning, etc.)

You will learn none of these things at a coding bootcamp. If you are really interested in going deeper, check out Georgia Tech OMSCS - you can do it while you are holding your current job (employer may even pay for it for you if yr lucky) and more importantly the courses are relevant to what you state actually interests you about future of tech. http://www.omscs.gatech.edu/current-courses

I have a feeling tremendous opportunity will be available over the next 10 years to software developers while other disciplines such as management become less and less important.

I disagree, solid managers and leaders will always be important. Perhaps you are focusing on the negative, rote aspects of yr job too much?

Re:How Startup Options and Ownership Work on Thursday August 25, 2016 @12:01PM (#12360105)
Are there any companies you know that use RSU's or stock grants instead of options? I've been interviewing at some startups and they only seem to offer options with their byzantine rules. Can people negotiate offers from options to RSUs/grants?

very interested in the answer to this as well.
Re:US contractor fined $3.1M for outsourcing work to India on Saturday March 26, 2016 @01:47PM (#11366597)
can someone with more knowledge of the legal code explain why no criminal charges?

$3.45m - $3.1m - $0.082m = $268k profit

Also getting to hold onto $3.4 million for the 8 year time period since 2008 would net some good returns as well.

Re:Interview Humiliation on Thursday October 29, 2015 @10:34AM (#10471275)
shame on them. doesn't sound like a place any self respecting developer would want to spend time at. what company was it?
