News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

fwiw, we launched a new design for the NYT in Jan with a proper print.css stylesheet.
Re:Colout – add colors to a text stream in your terminal on Thursday June 06, 2013 @11:34AM (#5833046)
This might be a dumb question: are there shells that have a HTML-based front and passes commands into the background? Seems like something like that would be far more flexible than this – which feels like a Jenga tower of hacks.
Re:3px of padding makes all the difference in the world on Tuesday May 28, 2013 @12:49AM (#5778145)
A reminder that the imbalance of 3px may be intentional:

It means that the post is closer to the comments are closer than to the user, and it pulls your eye more naturally to the comments than if they were perfectly equal.

Sometimes asymmetry is a useful design element, too.

Edit: I noticed that lukeholder has said the same thing.

My guess would be that Twitter has had plans to offer the same functionality.
Re:Introducing A New Article Design on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @01:42PM (#5363465)
I can't really say – I joined back in August and the project was already underway.
Re:Introducing A New Article Design on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @12:42PM (#5362965)
Hi, designer here. Sorry about that, you haven't actually been subscribed to a newsletter - you've been put on the waiting list, but we haven't updated the message in the confirmation email. Fixing this now.

I do a similar thing on my site, filtered by a couple tags I find the most interesting:

Say more about this, please? Is it a single text box?
Re:Watch a VC use my name to sell a con on Tuesday November 29, 2011 @11:11AM (#3290848)
Nothing wrong with working hard. But do it for yourself. Don't do it because a VC tells you to. Don't do it because the owner of a publication that thrives off of startup news tells you to.

Re:IPad in Business: St. Louis Urgent Cares on Monday September 19, 2011 @02:02PM (#3014532)
I also think you're underestimating the usefulness of a tablet form factor when physicians are sharing information with their patients. Harder to do that with a laptop.
Re:IPad in Business: St. Louis Urgent Cares on Monday September 19, 2011 @02:01PM (#3014526)
I thought it allows for dictation as input?
Re:Evernote Peek, The First iPad Smart Cover App on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @02:00PM (#2634226)
Brilliant.
Re:The Dangerous Mr. Khan on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @12:17PM (#2633740)
The idea is that there are always too many facts and data, and it's a history textbook's job to present a curated set of information that forms an easy to understand narrative.

This often means that perspectives from less influential / marginalized groups are downplayed or even ignored.

Much of postmodernist history is about recognizing that this always happens and that there are always multiple perspectives to a historical event.

Re:Normalize.css: An alternative to CSS resets on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @12:13PM (#2633715)
Not user defaults, useful defaults.

Some css resets strip out bullet styles for lists, or focus styles on selected text boxes. I assume this keeps things like that intact instead of nuking everything.

Re:Where is the web’s Loren Brichter? on Saturday May 21, 2011 @06:40PM (#2571946)
Because you have to deal with multiple browsers, some of which are still in the stone age. Because you have to be mindful of loading times. Because you don't have access to the system's full processing power, just what the browser gives you. Because you don't get pixel-perfect control.
Re:Fantastical: A new calendar app for Mac launches on Tuesday May 17, 2011 @06:50PM (#2558286)
And then when I want to actually review my day or week or month, I can pop open iCal or whatever calendar system I use.
Re:Fantastical: A new calendar app for Mac launches on Tuesday May 17, 2011 @06:49PM (#2558280)
A lot of people who don't like it seem to be missing the point. When I want to create an event, I don't want to launch iCal or navigate to Google Calendar, I want to enter the event in as little time and as intuitively as possible.

Accessing the app from the menubar solves the issue of speed for me, and the natural language processing lets it all feel intuitive and (dare I say) "magical". It just understands what I'm saying.

Really cool idea, but I think any system like this needs to have a fail-safe option, for when your phone runs out of batteries.
Really impressive work! I'd suggest for your demo video, instead of showing all your features in action, to instead talk through a typical scenario (someone taking an order, closing the order, etc) and showing what it's like to use the app.

They're called editors.
Re:Larry Page and Wall Street: Who needs who? on Monday April 18, 2011 @03:09AM (#2458272)
Sounds like "I do too think this is the way!"
I don't know how well this +1 thing will work, because as many others have noted, it's not passive. I have to actively click on it, and that's not something I think about when I'm running a search.

The you're connected to this person thing, however, has worked out quite well for me. A lot of the time, I'm looking for something that someone I follow on Twitter shared - and it just bubbles up for me. I'm a fan.

Re:GitHub now has view modes for image diffs. on Monday March 21, 2011 @07:02PM (#2352059)
I like the swipe feature, but it's harder to grab and drag that tiny handle than to just roll over an image. With rollovers, I'd be able to flip through the two much more rapidly and simply.

Also, I should mention that Kaleidoscope is one of my favorite apps: http://www.kaleidoscopeapp.com/

Re:GitHub now has view modes for image diffs. on Monday March 21, 2011 @06:36PM (#2351977)
This is really great!

But - another useful option would be mouse rollovers to switch between two images (which I think would work better than Onion Skin).

Re:Imagine K12 on Thursday March 17, 2011 @09:52PM (#2338972)
Makes me wonder if the same could happen with the health care / medical field.
I have wondered for a long time why there hasn't been a mobile version of Nintendogs / Tamagotchi. Seems like it would be the perfect way to carry one of those around, along with the ease of local social stuff on top.

And: a) touch interaction would feel way more immediate b) constant updates to these apps would allow the dev to constantly change / add to pet behavior

Re:Readable Hacker News Chrome Extension on Thursday March 10, 2011 @01:16AM (#2308302)
I'm happy with your design choices, actually. However, I do wish that clicking through to the comments was easier - giving the link a larger hit area, for example.
