Re:Material Design for Bootstrap on Wednesday December 10, 2014 @09:04AM (#8729157)
You know, I really want to like it, but I just don't.

I think Material works very well on touch surfaces. There are a ton of good design principles that it champions, but the interactions are strange on desktop.

Re:In a self-driving future, we may not even want to own cars on Saturday November 22, 2014 @06:52PM (#8647128)
This is interesting. I've assumed ride-sharing services would benefit self-driving cars, but the thought that individuals could own cars and rent them out in an AirBnB like manner is something I hadn't considered. That's very cool, considering that today cars are a pretty poor investment.

I don't think the condescending tone is necessary—there are actually about ten million links if you spell organization correctly.

Re:The Labors of Leisure on Monday October 20, 2014 @01:40PM (#8483396)
I think that leisure, perhaps, has the wrong kind of connotation with it.

I spend much of my own free time designing, writing and tinkering with things that I find interesting. To many of my coworkers, it appears that I am working, but to me it's working on something I enjoy—and more importantly things that other people may one day enjoy.

The challenge is to get more people to pick up an instrument, work on a new project, learn something new in their free time instead of starting at a television.

Re:A Raw Deal in Michigan on Friday October 17, 2014 @08:26AM (#8470562)
What about when campaign finance reform was passed? I thought that it was a fantastic idea, but we ended up with super PACs, which have seemingly unlimited funds. Even worse, the politicians they support can say that they don't have control and shed any liability.

I too want to hear ideas for fixing the system, but I think it is going to take more than just a few laws being passed.

Unfortunately, those direct mailers are the U.S. Postal Service's customers.

There is a rather inflammatory statement from the Postmaster General in the story about the demise of Outbox. “You mentioned making the service better for our customers; but the American citizens aren’t our customers—about 400 junk mailers are our customers. Your service hurts our ability to serve those customers.”

Slightly off-topic, but if you're looking for a good party console I'd recommend a GameCube. You can buy a used one and a few controllers for about $100. There are a ton of great local multiplayer games: Smash Bros, F-Zero, Def Jam, Mario Kart, Blitz 20-02. Plus, no need for updates.

Although this is genuinely a positive article about young people, I feel that pulling conclusions about all 18 to 29-year-olds is painting with a broad stroke.
Re:My Ideas, My Boss’s Property on Monday April 14, 2014 @10:04PM (#7589950)
Oddly, I was thinking about this exact topic this weekend. When I joined my current company, I signed a document saying whatever I build belongs to the company.

I'd like to go back and have this reversed. What is the best course of action? Write a letter saying that what I create on my own time is my property, and have the CEO or HR Manager sign it?
