> A lot of people work because they like to work

Or because they are wired in a way that they dont know what else to do. I would feel like i have been fallen into a trap if I was to spend my next 10 years trying to build the next company. I want to broaden my horizon.

Why wouldnt that apply here as well? Some successful guys post here. Do they get hassled?
Re:Ask HN: Any good Macbook Air alternatives? on Sunday August 28, 2011 @11:40AM (#2934115)
Im very much into light and small notebooks and I love the Lenovo X301. The big advantage over the air is that it has a matte screen. I run linux on it which works perfectly.
I would prefer the loop this way:

  for each(a in links)
   if (a.host && (a.host!=thisdomain || String(a).match(/item\?id=/)))
    a.target = "_blank";

How could an offer, that is 62% higher then the price at the stockmarket be refused?

Re:WebMynd Could Change the Way You Bookmark Websites on Sunday January 27, 2008 @05:23AM (#104925)
When I was making fun of Xobni some months ago, I said the next product of this kind would be "a browser plugin that lets you search your bookmarks":

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=56422

No its here and its called WebMynd. Alright.

Just for the record, here is my prediction: No one will use or remember this project in 2 years.

Re:Python Vs Php on Tuesday January 15, 2008 @12:56PM (#98754)
We do this thing in PHP with classes. See below. What is the advantage - if any - of namespaces?

  class yo
  {
   function isBig($number)
   {
      return ($number>1000);
   }
  }

  if (yo::isBig(50)) echo '50 is big';
Re:Python Vs Php on Tuesday January 15, 2008 @11:16AM (#98711)
> There are no namespaces, so functions often have prefixes to denote their source

Can somebody tell me, how namespaces work?

Say, without namespaces you would do it like this:

  function isBig($Number)
  {
   return ($Number>1000);
  }

  if (isBig(50)) echo '50 is big';
How would this look like when namespaces are used?

Hacker News Documentation

Is there something like this?I just noticed the "saved: 7" in my profile. And my guess was that this is a list of Comments I upvoted. I tried by upvoting a random Comment. And it seems to work. But how do I get rid of it again? Or in other words - how do I downvote? Or more generally: How do I find out how to do stuff?

Because it brings no benefit to anyone. Not to the one who runs the site and not to the one who signs up to it.

Re:Web 2.0 Can Be Dangerous... on Tuesday December 18, 2007 @02:29AM (#90659)
I love the design of useit.com. To me its one of the best designed websites out there. By far. I hate most websites. I also like Hacker News. So im surprised to see you disliking useit. Jittery typography? What would be better? One giant block of uniform text?

How would you design useit?

Re:"The Most Complex Piece of Engineering Known to Man" on Sunday December 16, 2007 @02:31PM (#90149)
Its not a comparison at all.

Linus replied to someone who said Linux coding style is not improving because no one sets the rules. Linus said that it is improving via evolution. Style liked by many will be taken over by others, style liked by few will fade out.

Not a comparison. Just a fact.

F11 also resizes the window to fullscreen. The aim of this project seems to be slightly different: Run Firefox without toolbars.

Still, it sounds crazy to have a dedicated project for this. I would think a commandline-option for firefox would be enough.

Re:40 Tips for optimizing your php Code on Monday October 15, 2007 @11:05AM (#68060)
Ok. The same comes again at point 15:

> Do not use functions inside of for loop, such as for ($x=0; $x < count($array); $x) The count() function gets called each time.

Re:40 Tips for optimizing your php Code on Monday October 15, 2007 @10:39AM (#68049)
> Set the maxvalue for your for-loops before and not in the loop.

What does this mean?

Re:40 Tips for optimizing your php Code on Monday October 15, 2007 @10:35AM (#68045)
> 1. If a method can be static, declare it static. Speed improvement is by a factor of 4.

Wow!

 function Prime1() { ...calc one million prime numbers...}

 static function Prime2() { ...calc one million prime numbers...}
Prime2() will calculate the prime numbers 4 times faster then Prime1()? Cool.

Re:24 illegal song downloads cost US woman 220,000 dollars on Friday October 05, 2007 @08:37AM (#63545)
The woman did nothing wrong.

Im not saying that the legal system is wrong either. But the woman did nothing wrong. I salute her for her courage to go to court.

And Im not going to spend any money on music anymore. Music and money dont go together for me. Im not going to finance people who sue people for sharing.

She did not sell the music. It was a "fan helps fan" thing. She did good, not bad.

Re:The Future of Web Startups on Thursday October 04, 2007 @02:04PM (#63119)
I dont think starting startups gets cheaper.

The whole essay is based on this idea. But Paul gives no reasons, why there should be a such a trend.

"bashing something you obviously have not even tried"

Yeah, just like heroin, regular work and sex with old people.

Have you even tried bashing things you didnt try or did you just do, what you condemn?

Re:YC startup Xobni launches beta at TechCrunch 40 on Tuesday September 18, 2007 @02:16PM (#56422)
wow! i looked at the demo for the first time and i can see nothing useful or interesting about xobni.

this project has raised millions in funding?

a plugin that adds some functions to outlook? this project is as doomed as a project can be.

next in line:

etirovaf : a browser plugin that lets you search your bookmarks

rabksat : a plugin that displays all your applications right on the desktop

nwodtuhs : the easy power-off button - power off as its meant to be

Re:I Think You're Fat: The Radical Honesty Movement on Thursday September 06, 2007 @02:05AM (#50970)
Third sentence, first lie. Talking about beautiful women, the author says:

 and maybe if I get divorced or become a widower, I can have sex with them
The truth is, he wants sex with them. Right here. Right now. I didnt read any further.
