Re:Mastodon Is Doomed on Wednesday April 26, 2023 @11:45AM (#35715604)
"The reality is people don’t want to pick their favorite community, running an instance is expensive and complicated, and owning your data isn’t a product feature."

This is the problem that affects all federated/decentralized projects. Same thing with Urbit. No one wants to keep their computer running 24/7 to support a network. and no one wants to bare the financial burden of paying for a server to host a community.

Re:Shutting down my legal torrent site after 17 years on Thursday April 20, 2023 @03:04PM (#35644650)
Nice to see the internet continuing it's decline.
it has tons of bots and dead accounts. i run a few channels with hundreds of "users". they get maybe 3 posts per month.
jesus christ...
Bag holders are going to try to spin this into a conspiracy theory to pump the value of BTC. Next they will be saying that Satoshi was Steve Jobs or some nonsense.
We're already screwed because the internet is dying. Everyone is just using phones now, all the forums are shutting down. IRC is dead. Matrix is dead. Discord lives because it's a gamer/trans rights echo chamber. but that's it. The late 90s and early 2000s was the golden era of the internet. we're living in the detritus now.
Re:Bittrex to Cease Operations on Friday March 31, 2023 @06:09PM (#35394351)
Without any fiat on-ramp crypto is worthless. its value is always measured by how much fiat it can be sold for. without that it has no value. what are you gonna do, go mail a stranger cash for coins? send him gold bars for coins? lol. this crap is OVER. please wake up! or dont, i don't really care..
Re:E3 Has Been Canceled on Thursday March 30, 2023 @06:06PM (#35379430)
Might as well cancel it. The games are non-existent. and the quality of the games they have been releasing look like xbox 360 graphics. Not to mention Microsoft buying up every studio they can get their hands on.
Re:Senate Bill to Ban TikTok on Wednesday March 29, 2023 @05:18PM (#35363844)
It's a social engineering tool designed, built, and ran by the Chinese government.
Re:Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound on Tuesday March 28, 2023 @11:50PM (#35352198)
i wish the government would have stayed out of it, it probably would have already collapsed by now if they had.
I figured this out long ago that's why i search for useless domains in hopes they will waste money on them for nothing. screw em.
tiktok has turned everyone into a bunch of dancing monkeys. hope it gets banned tomorrow.
The problem isn't that GTK3x is hard to use, It's that its simply not capable of creating beautiful UI's like GTK2x could. It can't create any tool bars without making them thick and huge, even DE's like xfce that try to maintain that old gtk2x look and feel can't do it anymore because of this.
i hate systemd it's always getting hung up on shutdown. "a stop job is running for blah blah" yea no. when i'm ready to shut down, it needs to shut down. immediately.
Yea, like that info wont be shared with other insurance comapanies...
yet another reason not to buy an EV. nice. Keep up the bad work crapitalism.

A Black Bar Appeared

Hacker news has added a new improvement to the theme, a stylish new black bar at the top. Maybe they will consider changing the back ground to a darker color as well or offering a dark mode for the site.

Re:TikTok has a plan to avoid getting banned in the US on Thursday March 23, 2023 @01:14PM (#35277952)
it would be a win win for the government not US users. The only way everyone wins is if it's removed from civilization completely.
i don't fear this stuff. at the end of the day if the digital world becomes detrimental to my health i can just call up my ISP and cancel my service. good luck rotting my brain when you have no internet connection to my house.
Re:Robots Have Been About to Take All the Jobs for 100 Years on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @05:27PM (#35267314)
i hope robots do take all the jobs. jobs today are terrible. they don't pay enough and you have to take orders from a class of managers that fancy themselves as feudal lords and you their serfs. so yea. good riddance to the "jobs". everything is made up in this system anyway, everyone knows it. just do crypto ubi and let the robots do all the drudge work.
Re:Banks as Collateral Damage in a Class War on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @11:05AM (#35262171)
only my whole life. evangelicals that is. i don't know much about mormons. but the evangelicals around my era are very multicultural and allow anyone in their church regardless of who they are and they will hire anyone at the businesses they own.
Re:Banks as Collateral Damage in a Class War on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @10:47AM (#35261851)
I never said that. lol. but they probably don't practice it amongst themselves.

They also function in a tribal manner where judeo christians do not, jewish and islamic communities help each other they don't have as many factions and in fighting as christians do. when a muslim or a jew opens a business they hire family and friends and people from their religious community, christians will hire anyone because that's what the christian religion is about, helping people regardless of who they are. it's very noble but in a capitalistic economic system it doesn't give christians any advantage.
It's happened it a few places in the third world but not on the scale it will be if it happens in the US. People aren't as docile today as they were back in the 30's when the great depression hit. they aren't just going to say "aw shucks" and retire to their shanties and eat hoover stew. people today are pissed off and armed to the teeth.
EV's are still new tech. they haven't been through the cruicble of time yet. people are waiting to see how long those batteries last. it's common knowledge everytime you recharge a battery you destroy it bit by bit until it finally no longer holds a charge.
If we have a collapse there could be a civil war of sorts so wouldn't be long before the power grid goes offline, then BTC will be useless almost instantly. Bullets and canned food will have far more value.
A vpn subscription only costs $10 per month and you can watch whatever you want.
Re:FCC orders phone companies to block scam text messages on Thursday March 16, 2023 @06:34PM (#35189829)
Me too. i'm getting like 3 scam calls per day now. some are from unsuspecting work from home people that have been duped in being the fall guys for the scammers, i can tell because when i tell them what they are doing is against the law and they could be fined thousands of dollars for it, they immediately crap their pants and start apologizing.
