Awning | Sr. / Staff Backend Engineer | Remote | Full-Time | https://www.awning.com

Awning helps individuals invest in Single Family Real Estate. Over 20% of Single Family Homes purchased this year were purchased as rentals. There is no dominant real estate technology nor is there a brokerage that supports individuals through the real estate investing process. Awning is a service that makes it much easier for individuals to invest in rental properties and gives individuals a level playing field with institutional investors like BlackRock and Goldman who are entering the space and making it harder for individuals to compete with the speed at which these players move in the market. We've raised $9.3M from top investors and are growing quickly.

We're hiring a Sr. / Staff Backend engineer to help us solve real estate data problems and to help us build features for our customers and agents to use. Some of the fun problems you can work on at Awning include search, dynamic calculations of returns on real estate investments, and mangling complex real estate data. We are built in AWS and we use Python, Django, Redshift, and Airflow. We're completely remote & distributed.

Feel free to e-mail me at shri(at)awning(dot)com if you're interested in learning more. Thanks!

Yes, they can. You own the home outright and can do whatever you wish with it after you a purchase!

Hi there -- Shri, founder of Awning, here.

Opendoor helps sellers of primary residences sell their homes without putting them on the market. They also help individuals buy primary residences that they've purchased.

We're helping individuals buy Single Family Homes as rental properties from the market, helping with all aspects of purchasing and managing rental.

When you work with Awning, you're assigned an Awning Advisor, a licensed real estate agent, who understands your financial goals with real estate. They then ensure that Awning is finding the best properties for you to purchase as a rental home. Awning agents only work with individual investors on our platform meaning they have a lot more expertise in the investing domain than a traditional residential real estate agent. They're salaried and receive benefits as well!

All of the properties on our platform have been curated by a combination of our algorithms and team and they come with a picture of their estimated financial returns, including numbers like the expenses you'd have maintaining the property as a rental and the rental income you'd yield. We've spent a lot of time building systems to analyze every listing on the market and surface the best deals -- something that the best firms on Wall Street have built themselves but haven't given retail investors access to. We're democratizing access to the speed and data these investors have.

Once you've purchased a property with us, we connect you with a vetted property manager who manages your rental day-to-day, dealing with maintenance requests & finding a tenant.

Since we're a licensed brokerage representing our customers, we don't have to charge any extra fees for our service -- we make money through the commission fee that's included in every listing on the market, regardless of which brokerage you buy it with.

Let me know if you have any other questions -- hope that's helpful!

Thank you! <3
Shri here - former YC founder and previously at Eaze. Peter Fishman (founder of Mozart) is the most intelligent and pragmatic data leader I've met and was a joy to work with. If you're looking to setup your data stack, I can say wholeheartedly that you're in good hands with Pete. :)

With a $40M - $200M estimated net worth and taking Sequoia's 30 year fund IRR of ~ 12%.

Let's assume he started with $40M and inherited it in 1970 (45 years ago). If he dumped it into a 12% IRR Mutual Fund his net worth would be: (1.12)^45 * $40,000,000 = $6.6B

which is greater than his $4B net worth.

This of course is presumptuous at a lot of levels, but the math does make sense.

Re:Show HN: Ng-classy – Use Angular 1 and ES6 with ease on Wednesday June 10, 2015 @03:19PM (#9694641)
I'd agree that this namespace conflict is by no means ideal. It's hard for someone to scope out the world of similarly-named packages in npm, determine which ones are actually used, and then name their package--even after investing in this process, it can be easy for one to miss something similar. That's probably why this happens so often.

People are being overly critical of atjoslin, given that he admitted in his edit that his intentions were not foul.

Re:Addy Osmani's Commit History on Friday May 29, 2015 @12:19AM (#9622625)
Github respects the dates attached to the commits, not the time they were actually committed.
I've worked on this problem before (unfortunately in closed source corporate america).

You can just stop the scroll event from propagating in the case that there's more rows to scroll through.

Eaze | San Francisco, CA | Node Engineers At Eaze, we're building the future of marijuana delivery. We're only 8 months old but are by far the largest in the space and recently raised a $10MM round in funding from significant Silicon Valley VCs.

We're rebuilding our application on a Node/Angular/Ionic stack. We're currently looking for more Node engineers to join an already strong team with contributors to top open source projects.

Email shri(at)eaze(dot)com if you're interested.

Boston's startup scene is dominated by MBAs who think hackers are cogs you put red bull in to get code out and technical cofounders are only worth 5% of the company. I think YC actually has done a lot to change this in the last few years as someone who interacts with the scene often, though these MBAs will never go away.

UMD is a state university--and basically, if you're not UCB, imo state schools suffer from the whole "ivy bias" that society tends to have.

In support of the variables, the comments seem to leverage Student1 and Student2 to describe the students the commenters are referring too, which is a lot easier than having to reexplain who you're referring to. (edit: DRY principle)
