Re:Databases in 2025: A Year in Review on Monday January 05, 2026 @01:54PM (#46502986)
TiDB has gained some momentum in silicon valley with companies looking to adopt it. Does he have any commentary on TiDB which is an OLTP and OLAP hybrid?
This is a very low quality article rehashing some ones FB/Instagram video
Hi peter, do you use any legal specific ai software ? Do you use ChatGPT in your work?
Re:Ask HN: What cars do you drive? on Wednesday January 22, 2025 @04:49PM (#42797888)
The only people who will respond is those who want to claim some status by saying they drive a reliable old car or some rare version of Porsche or Saab.

Nobody who drives the most recent bme x3 or Audi a8 or Nissan kicks is gonna respond.

I drive a Hyundai Ioniq5

Re:Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth on Monday September 30, 2024 @02:50PM (#41700600)
We can keep going down here, the problem with society can also be that prestige in itself is valuable.

Instead of say prestige being the side effect of being good at something useful for the society.

This is commendable, people who travel 50-300 miles do not use an Aeroplane because you need a car on the other end regardless, so I rather take my car.

For example, SF to Tahoe is demonstrated as a route I could fly, but I need a car on the other end for sure. I could rent a car which is a pain.

I could arrange a driver service, but at that point I could get driver to drive me from San Francisco.

It is too expensive for folks who want to fly themselves and save money, it is not a great deal better for those who can hire drivers.

Berkley bowl in Berkley carries it. It is I think one of the best grocery stores out there.
Re:Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today? on Thursday February 29, 2024 @07:14PM (#39556970)
Yes, we had a test fail when generating `12 days ago` strings from a past date.
Re:Yup, that was an earthquake outside SF on Friday October 27, 2023 @11:24PM (#38046831)
In Oakland, I felt it more significantly than any other earthquake in a while.
They should have also included a quote from CISR an Indian lab that go there about the same time as many of the American labs https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.03544

OMG somebody just listened to the OddLots podcast. We are all sheeple.
I am a greencard holder who has moved back to Europe and will give up my GC. Can I open and operate stock trading accounts in US to manage the money I made in the US?
Automatic indexes. Adding indexes is a guessing game. It's a bit of abstraction leakage. Imagine a product engineer did not have to think about how the data is laid out on disk

Re:Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe? on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @07:14PM (#25769932)
In Silicon valley, its usually a race of execution. Hire an engineer today at any price rather than wait for tomorrow. This is due to sheer competition breathing down your neck. I do not see this in Europe and hence they do not have the urgency and low wages.
Re:Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe? on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @07:12PM (#25769909)
Getting very rich allows me to do cook less, do less chores and build up my skill further (get better) or to pursue passions that do not pay well.

I calculated moving to Europe as a SWE would lead to a drastic lifestyle change for me—even with retirement, healthcare and children's education considered (with 2 children, Europe wins at 3 hands down).

Re:Rideshare operations are being suspended in California on Thursday August 20, 2020 @02:18PM (#24226550)
Lyft is being petty here. I understand that they cannot make all drivers employees, but they could have some drivers on the road and not pulled the rug on users.

This goes to say that you cannot trust private companies like Lyft for critical services. The government actually has been transparent about this change and Lyft is acting like a spoilt child, not even willing to try the employee route.

Lyft pulling the rug overnight is in bad faith.

Re:Density raises $51M Series C led by Kleiner Perkins on Tuesday July 28, 2020 @02:17PM (#23978968)
On my street in SF that has a dead end, cars keep coming up looking for parking and on weekends they usually find nothing. But they get stuck turning around and cause a mess.

Could I use Density to count cars and display number of empty spots at the entrance of my street?

Re:Spreadsheet – A Personal History on Wednesday March 11, 2020 @04:57PM (#22550501)
Hi I am the author of the above essay. I think spreadsheets are a highly underrated software that has made us all productive. This essay is a paean to the spreadsheet.
I subscribed and am excited about it.

I have a little gripe about the name, the name Juggernaut. Juggernaut is already an Indian company that sells books written by home authors to people to read on their phones.

They are fairly successful. Naming two things Indian the juggernaut

Re:Redis Labs Raises a $60M Series E Round on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @10:26PM (#19205295)
The Basecamp model has the risk of some other company doing the same thing by taking venture capital and growing by getting more customers. At some point the economy of scale kicks in and the service get cheaper than Basecamp model.

Basecamp could have been slack, but slack ate their cake.

Better health insurance and lunch are signs that the company cares more about employees. This is a big signal in my book
Re:Introducing React Navigation for React Native on Thursday January 26, 2017 @06:25PM (#13496363)
Blessed Library: Something that is not part of the core offering but is the recommended way of doing certain things by the core maintainers. The main reason it is not in core is that it is probably not needed by all users of core.

:)

Re:Introducing React Navigation for React Native on Thursday January 26, 2017 @06:23PM (#13496346)
The design of the website does not tell us who the maintainers / creators of the library are. At times it feels like a blessed library by the react-team. Most likely this was not intentional. It would be cool to have an about-us page where they talk about the maintainers and the "react-community".
Re:Ask HN: What happened to Facebook graph search? on Thursday September 08, 2016 @11:18AM (#12453808)
My source tells me people did not use graph search. Only engineers or programmers used it. The wide population is not used to searching in a structural format. The cost benefit ratio did not work out
Re:How Facebook Tries to Prevent Office Politics on Friday July 01, 2016 @07:35PM (#12020463)
The Philip Su example is great, but being an early employee and a manager has basically has insurance against getting fired and he can do what he pleases. That IMHO does not reflect the life of an average facebook employee.
