Re:I'm Done with Ubuntu on Thursday February 06, 2025 @10:15AM (#42963141)
stat command gets the detail of when the OS was installed on the machine. uptime doesn't give that. I wanted to say that I have been using the same development machine at work for 4.5 years. "running" was not the right word for it, obviously.
Re:I'm Done with Ubuntu on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @11:00AM (#42950420)
Current work machine. Running fine for 4.5 years.

  $ stat / | grep "Birth" | sed 's/Birth: //g' | cut -b 2-11

  $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources

You may also want `apt-listbugs` package to see the serious bugs before running upgrade.
Re:I'm Done with Ubuntu on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @10:35AM (#42949962)
If you configure apt sources to use testing or unstable upstream of Debian you can get latest kernel.

This way, you can also have a rolling distro.

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting

This is quite possible, right?

For eg: if you work for a Swiss or US employer and make more than 69k(?), say 100k, as a freelancer, and have a family, you have to pay around 14%(upper limit somewhere around 1000) of the income as health insurance contribution.

I think it is costly. It is difficult to digest for me that the health insurance costs more than housing.

Thank you for taking the effort, and for the wishes. Hopefully she find something soon.

Bayern. 4 years bachelor's degree in civil engineering, hydro science and engineering Master's.
Re:Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage on Thursday February 01, 2024 @03:35PM (#39221063)
Well I have acquaintances employed here too. And my wife's case is not a single one.

I have a friend who migrated from India and his wife used to work for a pharma/biotech firm back in India and had some temporary work here in Germany, when peak COVID happened, when pharma companies were hiring a lot.

She already has a master's degree from India and she has been undergoing further trainings supported by Job center, and still no luck.

Re:Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage on Thursday February 01, 2024 @03:05PM (#39220623)
"TU9 German Universities of Technology e. V. is the alliance of nine leading Technical Universities in Germany"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TU9

And I have a remote job and we almost have no location restrictions.

If there is no demand, how could she see the job advertisements and apply for them?

Re:Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage on Thursday February 01, 2024 @02:49PM (#39220384)
Can confirm this.

My wife has a master's degree in engineering from a TU9(top 9 universities in Germany). And a B2 language certificate. She has not found a job so far. Been more than a year and half since she started actively applying. At times she ticks all the requirements in the job description, and still no luck.

She is planning to go to a bakery starting next week. The guy at the bakery was so surprised to see someone with master's degree in engineering ready to work at a bakery. So the perception and reality is different.

Unless you are in IT/software development, it is hard to get a job. Traditional engineering disciplines are hard to break into.

Re:Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 DNS resolving issues on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @08:31AM (#37764168)
There is https://www.dns0.eu and https://nextdns.io.

I like the 300K requests per month free tier that nextdns.io has. Comes with plenty of filters.

You got sources for this claim? If he has done anything wrong, why is he not in jail for that?
Interesting, because Indian Government recently jailed an independent fact checker for a tweet he made 4 years ago.

This new body seems to be a tool to suppress dissent and promote the fake news machinery Government and the ruling party is notorious for.

So how would fraud prevention be interpreted?

For eg: denying service from a German retailer depending on the ML prediction result of the transaction being classified as fraud probable(Germany has pay by invoice), would also be constitutional or not?

Or credit score/risk rating using ML, trained on a feature extracted from parameters like Zip code, ethnicity could also classified as automated data analysis for prevention of criminal acts, right?

Or this is only applicable to police?

Re:DNS0: The European public DNS that makes your internet safer on Tuesday February 07, 2023 @09:08AM (#34692880)
If I choose their DNS, the website shows a text at the bottom that says "You are using dns0.eu"

How does the website know I'm using their DNS? I couldn't find anything in the HTTP header that would help them with this.

I can understand if it was a small subset of companies that made it difficult for the user.

I can show multiple government websites where the UX is broken. There is no profit motive there. But if you live in the EU, you probably have seen it already.

It is so worse that chrome has an add-on that has 800k downloads.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/i-dont-care-about-...

The websites make it so hard to reject cookies or selectively accept to make the website work for your benefit.

Quick google search about the effects of the law shows various studies done so far to assess the positive impact it brought.

https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/10/most-eu-cookie-consent-not...

I think the USB-C mandate also going to result in a similar implementation by companies.

Apple already setting the trend by going to have only wireless charging for phones.

https://youtu.be/jO83ARJiOfQ

I fail to understand why politicians thought the cookie dialogue was a good idea. Adds almost nothing to benefit user and huge annoyance from the UX perspective.
Fun fact. DHL owns an electric vehicle company, StreetScooter, that produces DHL last kilometer delivery vehicles.

Re:An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @01:57PM (#33791616)
I was concerned with the power draw. But as per the article, it looks like the difference is negligible.

I assumed being ARM, pi was supposed to draw lower power. Looks like not the case.

Found another study confirming the same.

Live in a cold country. Hesitant to touch an aluminium laptop. Static electricity and cold metal.
The problem I have with tools like this is the latency. Even the git helper info packaged with Oh My ZSH is slow.

It is useful. But I really don't like waiting for cursor to appear when I want to type the next command.

Haven't found anything better than Ctrl+R.

Re:My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home on Saturday April 23, 2022 @11:38AM (#31135186)
I fondly remember the days in 2010 in Zurich, and cablecom had good functional internet, don't remember the speed. Then I moved to Germany in 2013, and it surprised me that I can't have internet in my apartment for the next two months, because the technician appointment and when I finally received, I got a meagre DSL connection with bad ping and 32 Mbits.

It has gotten better over the years, but even the best available consumer connection is 1000 Mbits down and 200Mbits up.

Majority of the tech Germans I meet are embarassed about the internet and telecom infra, being an advanced economy.

Hopefully the new government fixes things.

The Wikipedia link is correct, but you are only seeing one side.

Getting into engineering schools requires coaching, which majority can't afford. Second, surviving there requires additional skills that state board educated Dalits and lower castes don't have.

You can Google for the number of Dalits and lower castes really getting admitted or finishing the course.

Re:Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on Friday April 22, 2022 @05:14PM (#31128234)
Still remember in 2006, went to a local internet cafe in rural India to fill out the form for requesting Ubuntu on a CD, and weeks or months later postman delivered it. It worked perfectly on the cheap laptop I had, in the first attempt.

The experience is still top notch. Can't thank Ubuntu team enough.

Now I keep a USB stick with Ubuntu image all the time as a Swiss army knife for fixing computers.

Re:Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities? on Friday April 22, 2022 @05:03PM (#31128106)
Would there be a backlash from the local community? I think unless the said tech community makes a positive impact to the native society live there, the reception is not going to be welcoming, I think.

Majority of the places I have seen tech people move to, the first thing to happen is increase in prices, be it housing or services.

Majority of Indians IT professionals or majority who has attended college in India are upper caste folks, the main supporters of current ruling party. So the trend is not surprising.

Many of them migrated to West and continue to do the same caste things even in silicon valley. Google the Cisco caste discrimination incident.

Re:Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost on Thursday April 14, 2022 @01:45PM (#31030456)
Oh, please. Sadhguru is a politician who talk pseudoscience and a tool of current Indian Government.
