Oftentimes when I see a software engineer job listing for a SaaS, there’s always a “software engineer (growth)”. What is that like?I think marketing metrics and using engineering to grow in general is super cool. If you work in this space do you get to learn a lot about digital marketing?

I am in too deep with my current career path to make any drastic changes, but the role that I was always curious about was sales engineering. For the sales engineers on HN, what is it like? Is it a lot of stress and pressure? Do you have to be “on” all the time? Is it a good long term career or do people usually move onto other roles? Is it a good opportunity to learn how to sell to people?
Is this for any sort of web content?
Wow, building physical tech feels so much more approachable because of stuff like this
I’m not at all familiar with networking tech in general, but is Click a commonly used tech? A modular and configurable router sounds pretty cool
This is so cool! Wish you the best
Wow thank you so much for all these great resources! I think I’ll start with the article you shared. Also, I guess this is me being ignorant, but it’s amazing how vast the PM field is. Excited to dive in. I will most likely be reading all of the materials you’ve share with me.
Also, I checked your profile! I wish I knew your Twitter handle or some other ways to keep in touch somehow. But oh well! I won’t push for it.
Thank you! I will check this out :)
Update: this book looks like it came out in 2008. Still relevant?

My role is software engineer but lately I’ve been taking on more PM responsibilities. Are there any good online communities, learning resources, or PM hype materials to get me excited about this stuff?Right now I am reading “head first pmp” to get me started
Interesting! Roughly speaking how many articles have you published on this site?

I was thinking of starting a blog with just articles of technical things that I know.Just out of curiosity, if you were to write “semi-decent” articles on a regular basis with no serious marketing efforts (SEO, sharing on social media, etc), can you expect at least a handful of visitors via natural web osmosis? I’m talking tens of people per month.
Woah that’s a very valid point

It's been a while since I've last used node to build a backend, and the last time I did Express was the go-to solution. Is that still the case?
I don't have much time to do too much research and I usually default to the most popular solution in such cases.
Yup! I’ve seen them both. It really is a grind to get to the point where something actually sticks. The biggest skill I think I need is just shipping really fast

I think it would be a fun and rewarding hobby to build something online that people pay for. I’m talking in the ranges of $100 to $xxxx per month. I feel like if you are persistent enough and lucky enough, you might be able to hit those numbers for a few months before the churn catches up. Still, it would be a cool experience! So I thought about how I would do it. I’ve heard of people like...
Agreed. I had this problem for a while but realized I wasn’t doing myself any favors.

What’s the best way to host your apps as a solo dev?
I personally don’t know how to manage an app end-to-end. I’ve only ever worked at big companies so that part has always been abstracted away from me.Is it better to just learn how to manage an app by myself on an EC2 host? Or should I go the way of just using services like Heroku/Fly.io?As for expected amount of users: not many....
Systems engineering is actually an overloaded term and that Wikipedia article is correct. The author’s definition is also correct of course. Just talking about different things.

It’s cool to see PHP getting its second heyday once again. It’s currently a perfect storm of two communities starting to notice PHP. From the JavaScript side, people are comparing React with PHP, and on the bootstrapped start up side, people are talking about just using a single index.php file for your entire product without dealing with a complex tech stack as inspired by Pieter Levels.

Wow, these are all great suggestions, thank you! Especially creating an environment where their reputation matters is an interesting point. My biggest concern is images more than text (though they can both cause a lot of damage). If it takes that much manpower I might not even allow any images in the first place like HN.

I would like to create my own forum, but concerned about the possibility of users uploading harmful images. Does anyone have any experience implementing an automated system that detects and blocks harmful content or running a user generated content website in general?
Sad that this is happening and sad that it had to come to online shaming to make changes happen.

Yes, I always felt like building highly interactive user interfaces is like building a game. I guess it feels even more like that if it’s “multiplayer” like Figma.
If the browser ever becomes a popular platform for mainstream games then I suspect the quality of web applications will also boom just because of all the talent pouring into the browser as a platform.

I think this is really awesome.
I’m doing a deep dive in how various “backend languages” are being used to create interactive front ends (i.e. Phoenix LiveView) and I might even look into this as another example.
