My favourite CouchDb commercial: http://vimeo.com/11852209
Re:CouchDB 1.0 on Wednesday July 14, 2010 @12:16PM (#1515036)
Well done guys. But don't forget to credit Bryant Cutler (http://bryantcutler.com/) for the awesome logo.

update: downvoted? why? I really think the guy should be credited. He did a fricking awesome job which CouchDB has based its whole image on. The faux movie poster linked at the top of this story has a giant size version of his logo as the very backdrop. This shit is important. Credit him, says I!

Re:Cat5 to replace HDMI later next year? on Wednesday July 14, 2010 @12:06PM (#1514998)
"Currently, the specification only allows for a 100Mb/sec Ethernet connection, but the alliance claims HDBaseT will be scalable up to 1Gb/sec in the future. Similarly, HDBaseT can currently playback video at up to 10.2Gb/sec, but it's theoretically scalable up to 20Gb/sec."

Anyone else see a two-order-of-magnitude problem with that statement? Uh .. if it can only transfer 100Mbps, where does the 10.2Gbps video come from? And why does a predicted 10x increase in the base transport speed only translate to a 2x increase in the high level delivery speed?

A room of one's own and GBP£500 a year? Now where have I heard that before.
Re:Actually KIN Sold More Than 503 Devices on Thursday July 08, 2010 @10:39AM (#1497478)
The daring fireball article did say "sold". Other comments here have indicated that Verizon were giving the units away just to get rid of them. Maybe they didn't pay MS for those. Who knows what was in their contract. Maybe MS decided to scrap the deal 2 months ago and told Verizon to dump its stock. Until Microsoft releases its Official Kin Sales Report, it's all just speculation.

I am inclined to believe Gruber. If he stakes his reputation (very important to his massively inflated ego) on a specific number, it means he's satisfied it's correct, and that's a pretty strong vote in my book. Could be wrong of course but in the absence of hard evidence I go by gut & human nature...

How about "to prove he wasn't just making the whole thing up"?
I don't believe that for a second. Most people I know can get any drugs they want, and yet they're not a bunch of drugged up crazies, just like most adults can buy alcohol whenever they want, and most are not alcoholics.

Let people make their own decisions.

Wow, I've been doing daily meditation all these years and didn't even know it!
Re:iOS 4 Update Now Avaliable on Monday June 21, 2010 @07:47PM (#1450454)
How come it says tethering is new? Tethering has been available on the 3GS for ages, I've used it numerous times.
Pure fantasy. And you are completely ignoring probably the #1 source of anti-US hate - their proxy support of Israel. There is no Chinese equivalent, nor is there ever likely to be.
Yeah man. Maybe you should zoom out on Google Maps and see who lives nearby, especially anyone who might have (say) the world's largest standing army, and then come back and explain how it's a wise idea for the US Army to start seizing Chinese assets in Afghanistan ..

Sorry for the snarky tone but seriously, it's this kind of ridiculous macho attitude that got the US into so much trouble in the first place.

Re:The Politically Incorrect Guide to Ending Poverty on Sunday June 13, 2010 @08:21AM (#1427347)
I suspect that the advent of nanotechnology is going to cause civilisation upheaval the likes of which we haven't seen since the industrial revolution, if ever. All this shit will happen, and much, much more.

Hell, why limit ourselves to the surface of the sea? The materials nanotech promises to deliver will make it possible to live far above or below sea level with equal ease. Sky-steading, anyone?

Re:Mongrel2 on Saturday June 12, 2010 @10:21AM (#1426030)
Oh. Right you are. I hadn't heard of it, but it looks interesting. Certainly a big time-saver to get all that for free.
Re:Mongrel2 on Saturday June 12, 2010 @10:14AM (#1426016)
Looks like the project web site also has a custom ticketing system and repo browser. Why not.
Re:How to Afford Anything on Tuesday June 08, 2010 @10:25AM (#1413994)
All this pain to drop $2.5k per year on a Nikon camera? Dude, seriously, just take a few months and learn some skills at something, then get a decent job using them. You'll be able to buy a new camera every freaking month.

I mean I'm all for living within your means and planning and frugality but seriously, don't eat out except for the cheapest fast food around? That's the wrong way to go about it. Upgrade your cash flow, not downgrade your life.

Re:Apple WWDC 2010 Keynote on Tuesday June 08, 2010 @10:10AM (#1413953)
I am pretty sure if you had just left clicked it like a normal person you would have been fine. And wow, 1 second after you click a video link, Windows Awesome Firewall™ says something wants to connect to the internet? I wonder what that could be? Maybe the movie I clicked on 1 second ago? Why I think I'll deny it! Hey, this stupid thing doesn't work! Apple sucks!
The whole point of the tax is to discourage consumption. If Ms W. Queen can't afford the tax to feed concentrated diabetes inducer to her little angels, then good! Success!

Non-diet soda is almost as bad as cigarettes and we should tax the freaking hell out of it.

Re:What kind of girl do you think I am? on Sunday June 06, 2010 @01:55AM (#1408102)
the Chinese government doesn't care about freedom of speech

Oh, I think the CCP cares very deeply about freedom of speech. Just maybe not in the way that you'd like ; )

Re:What kind of girl do you think I am? on Sunday June 06, 2010 @01:50AM (#1408099)
That is utter hyperbole. Google never had the "freedom of speech for ~1.3 billion people" to trade. They do not and probably never will have anything like that kind of power. I am far from a Google fanboy but if you're going to criticise them, please keep it reasonable.
Re:How little musicians earn online on Sunday June 06, 2010 @01:40AM (#1408089)
Care to provide some evidence that it is being done, ie. that artists are happy with the payment arrangement negotiated on their behalf with Spotify et al on the basis that it constitutes cheap advertising?
Re:How little musicians earn online on Sunday June 06, 2010 @12:41AM (#1408014)
And what exactly is the point of "advertising" a song to people who, for all intents and purposes, already own it?
I think "the stick" is a pretty bad motivator overall

Totally agree. Isn't one of the imputed advantages of American entrepreneurship over, say, European, that founders don't lose everything (money, social standing) when they fail? This article seems to be claiming the opposite.

I am more interested in how to save memory to disk and restart...
Re:ASK HN: How to plan and manage a large web project? on Thursday May 27, 2010 @07:37AM (#1383287)
I recommend:

1. using branches as short-term scratch spaces for new features. Branches should not be long-lived and if they are they should be regularly merged, unless you are deliberated separating them for some reason (eg 1.x-stable, 2.x-stable etc)

2. You owe it to yourself to get familiar with a SCM ASAP. I use and recommend git. I also use and strongly recommend a paid account at github. Yes, paid! Then give your programmers access and watch it all come together there.

3. I use and recommend lighthouse. I used to dislike it but it's just so frictionless and easy to use that I can't think of anything else I'd recommend.

Re:Ruby on Rails 2.3.6 Released on Sunday May 23, 2010 @10:07AM (#1372281)
So have I actually, on some smaller projects, but it's going to be a major change to switch over larger ones. I'll be sticking on 2.3 with them for the time being.
Re:Ruby on Rails 2.3.6 Released on Sunday May 23, 2010 @06:20AM (#1372102)
Argh, my pet ticket didn't make it in: https://rails.lighthouseapp.com/projects/8994/tickets/2188-i...

Still no 1.9 for me, then :/
