Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025) on Monday November 10, 2025 @10:25AM (#45876860)
I’m terrible at maintaining my resume/cv so I think this is awesome!
Re:An eBPF Loophole: Using XDP for Egress Traffic on Thursday November 06, 2025 @08:51AM (#45835221)
Thanks for the effort making a great overview. I’ve used both frameworks before but not deeply, so your write up was a good read.
Re:An eBPF Loophole: Using XDP for Egress Traffic on Wednesday November 05, 2025 @09:29AM (#45823230)
Forgive me of my ignorance, but is XDP faster than DPDK for packet processing? It seems like DPDK has had a lot of work done for hardware optimizations that allow speeds that I can’t recall XDP being able to do. I have not looked too deeply into this though, so I’m very open to being wrong!
Re:Attention is your scarcest resource on Thursday July 31, 2025 @07:40AM (#44744603)
I’m glad I’m not the only one! I decided early on that the balance means more to me than making more money or having the most amazing resume.

I started using fish on a dare from a coworker who thought it would be funny. Joke’s on them, it’s been five years and I still love it. Started using starship this year and agree with you.
I totally agree. I have an older Ford Ranger and I hope it lasts forever because I don't see a newer truck on the market that fits your description and has as much utility as my little Ranger with a 6' bed.

Thanks! I'll have a look
Re:Good Technical Infosec Blogs? on Friday December 02, 2022 @10:59AM (#33832239)
Thanks, I was surprised to have reddit suggested, but a couple of my respected friends in the field also generally look at r/netsec so it must be pretty good.
Re:Good Technical Infosec Blogs? on Thursday December 01, 2022 @08:08PM (#33825448)
Yeah it doesn't quite scratch the technical itch, but I think it's fun and informative on history and personal stories.
Re:Good Technical Infosec Blogs? on Thursday December 01, 2022 @08:06PM (#33825435)
This is great, I'm excited to explore

Good Technical Infosec Blogs?

I'm looking for really good technical blogs or even blog posts. From stepping through gritty details of exploits to big picture ideas even to discussion about specific tools, how they work, and pros and cons. I am just finding myself, having been in field for five years or so, really hungry for more quality info. There are tons of company marketing blogs that are largely superficial, but finding...

It doesn't hurt that the Salt Lake is sadly shrinking currently. So it's even worse than it probably was when they arrived.
"Dating" during marriage is just a way to make sure you set aside time to keep a relationship healthy. It doesn't need to be "a permanent state of ersatz courtship". My wife and I go on hikes, work in the yard together and play board games. Many other couples do similar things. Again, it's just a way to set aside time to focus on a relationship in the hustle and bustle of life.
Re:Easy [Wind] Chime Design and Build on Monday May 09, 2022 @10:55AM (#31314857)
I found this website while looking for DIY instructions for wind chimes. It immediately threw me back to the early internet days with its simple design and rich, thorough information about a niche topic. I thought many here on HN would enjoy it as much as I have.
I’d say it’s probably good to know at least one bowline variation that locks the tail end so it can’t come loose, but that’s maybe the climber in me coming out too strong. Otherwise I’d agree with you
Dumb point of view. He raised money to self publish. What in the world is wrong with that?

However I didn’t know about his success in raising this much money. I read Mistborn, and then I tried to read some other books but found his writing to be immature and his characters flat and not compelling. Am I in the minority?

I had just finished reading the Expanse series, which are extremely well written, so maybe it was whiplash.

Re:World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate on Thursday February 24, 2022 @10:44PM (#30463486)
I’ve heard this called the “one bad day” approach. The animals have a good life with only one bad day. In my opinion it’s probably the most ethical way to keep animals if the intent is to slaughter them at some point.
Re:US approves new headlights that won’t blind oncoming drivers on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @10:02AM (#30360850)
I’d be interested in getting others’ views on this, but it strikes me that headlights and their angle or height can sometimes be thought about as part of the “size/arms race” of vehicles. They say if you’re in the bigger vehicle in an accident, you’re safer, and maybe folks also think if you’re in a massive lifted truck you’re also less likely to be blinded by another vehicle. I personally drive an old Corolla and I am sick of being blinded by almost every other vehicle in the road these days. It’s to the point where it almost feels like a full on hazard because I literally can’t see for a few seconds while approaching oncoming headlights. My subjective experience is that it is getting worse. Needless to say, but I am very happy with this news and potential change.
I had to do this too. I eventually learned I could write python plug-ins and started writing the workflows that way instead. But then it exposed to me how actually unwieldy the api was and I was extremely unhappy with the work. I would automated everything myself, without the framework, but the platform was in part there to help those who lacked the technical skills to do everything from a terminal etc. I hear they’re still fighting with it even months after I left the job.
Absolutely, assembly got much easier for me after playing this.
If you enjoy Shackleton’s story, the you might enjoy “Alone on the Ice” about Mawson’s expedition. I found both to be compelling stories but Mawson’s is the one that just keeps coming back to me. I won’t ruin it for the prospective reader, but it is absolutely stunning what was endured.
Re:Ask HN: How to Grieve? on Tuesday January 18, 2022 @08:23PM (#29988650)
Sympathies for your loss. Grief comes in many forms and there is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s even harder when you don’t feel like you have anyone to grieve with. I’m an open ear if you need one.

Recently there was a podcast episode made by some guys I follow that is one of the most real an raw conversations I’ve heard (other than my own) about death and grieving. It may or may not be helpful. I’ll quote the description and give a link.

“On November 19th Erin and Michael lost their 13-year old daughter, London, to a rare disease (HLH). It was an intense fight and escalated faster than anyone could cognitively understand. One of our practices is to be open and honest about our process, to discuss how we work influences how we live. This is the start of that conversation, of realizing your worst fear and stepping up to confront all that comes with grief, pain, loss, and love.”

Same experience, same timeframe in TX. I remember learning about shadows in Egypt vs Greece during the same day of the year and thinking it was really cool. In elementary school even.
Re:Let's Settle This on Monday January 10, 2022 @10:30AM (#29876312)
Prior to the Disney takeover I would’ve argued with you, but now? :(
There is basically zero chance I would do these calls prior to an agreed on start date. I spend enough of my life working already.
Looks interesting. I wonder if serious bpf applications (maybe not quite as big as cilium, but bigger than hello world) could use this out if you’d still want to write your own user space etc. I’ve done some interesting shenanigans to get data from my bpf programs.
Re:Ask HN: Nerds of HN, did you overcome loneliness? on Friday December 31, 2021 @10:30AM (#29748873)
Yeah I was going to say this. A hobby that gets you out of the door and interacting with people not through a screen helps a lot. From there you can work on your social skills with this helpful buffer of the shared enjoyment of an activity with other people.
