Ask YC: Projects that inspire you

Hi YCers,Sometimes I stumble upon projects / startups really excite me.Years ago, I was really excited about del.icio.us: so clean, so nicely developed. Now it's been overrun a bit, quality has gone down.Today I stumbled upon http://weewar.com - So NICE! Well developed, so clean, just sexy.I'd like to know, what are startups out there that really inspire you, that are really just the cream of...

There's a lot of agile floating around, so that seems to be useful for a lot of people.
Re:Ask YC: What editor/ide do you use to hack javascript? on Saturday April 05, 2008 @07:18AM (#155588)
vim here with jquery too. working phenomenally well for me, though I understand there's no kind of js debugging built into vim. The matching braces highlight function is my debugging tool.

Re:Amazon EC2 gets static IPs. on Thursday March 27, 2008 @06:44AM (#147682)
This is amazing. I am in the process of deploying my webapp, and was considering slicehost due to the static ip's issue.

Then I took another look on the aws pages, and, hooray: elastic ip's were introduced yesterday!

Re:What can't rails do? When is it the right language? on Tuesday March 25, 2008 @09:58PM (#146425)
Just give it a go, it'll never hurt to learn something new.

Coming from PHP, you'll probably see some benefits right away.

Create a great product. Focus a lot on how you can be better.
give jquery a try:

http://jquery.com

Most fun javascript library ever.

Nice for you, congrats, sounds like the perfect situation :)
Re:How to find hackers for only stock options? on Sunday March 09, 2008 @12:50PM (#132539)
Have a really good idea and start pitching it to hackers. If it's interesting enough there will be takers.
Re:Ask YC: Why do you recommend a Macbook? on Friday March 07, 2008 @01:35PM (#131376)
stable, affordable, good user interface. expose and spaces are time savers.

big no is battery time.

I don't think you're missing out on too much if you primarily code.

Re:Ask YC: Any of you use Dvorak? on Friday February 29, 2008 @08:38PM (#126493)
Using it, for two years, with vim. First two weeks were hard.

Ask YC: Your Favorite RSS Feeds

Fellow YCers, SERIOUSLY.

Take a look at this graph: http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/online-info-flow.jpg

And come up with a way to optimize that.

Now THAT'S a startup.

What do you think?

I've found python much easier to deploy.

Rails is just a pain.

Python has a longer history on the web. Give cherrypy a try, which, although not as powerful as Rails, is lightning fast.

Re:Run this: python -c "import this" on Thursday February 07, 2008 @02:29PM (#111291)
what does it do?
Re:Ask YC: How many people here have a degree and are programmers? on Thursday February 07, 2008 @01:35PM (#111173)
What's your startup?
Re:The Arc challenge in Seaside on Thursday February 07, 2008 @05:25AM (#110848)
I've always loved seaside.

Was kind of hard to get into though last time I looked, probably better now.

Any experiences?

Ask YC: Iterations

How often has your startup gone through an iteration where aspects of the idea or the whole idea completely changes?PG points out that this happens, and I have definitely experienced this again and again - my startup has probably gone through 5 complete transformations. I figure that as long as I have the funds, and the software is getting better, that's ok. I'm committed to launching asap of...

What's a good, current Prolog implementation?
Re:Ask YC: Expressive languages for spatial nodes on Monday February 04, 2008 @06:11PM (#109364)
Yes, that's true. But I still have a requirement for a schemaless db, so sql doesn't cut it.
No, I'm on a mac, don't have access to IE.

It's definitely ok to release an alpha that only works in a certain browser, but make sure you tell people, and be prepared to cut some people off.

Smart idea.

How would you determine that though?

I have my doubts that approaching this by finding some kind of formula on people-attributes will work.

I believe it is best for me to say who I work well with.

What is needed is a collective intelligence augmentation tool. Which the internet basically is, but how can it be improved? I.e. what we really need is more, and more relevant information at my fingertips.

Re:Ask YC: Expressive languages for spatial nodes on Monday February 04, 2008 @01:46AM (#108988)
Appreciated, definitely clean code to express nodes and relationships.

Is there a modern implementation that's well supported by a community?

Re:Ask YC: Expressive languages for spatial nodes on Monday February 04, 2008 @01:44AM (#108987)
mooneater, do you have any suggestions on how to actually store and persist such a data structure in RAM?

Would I use something like a wsgi webserver, that runs as a daemon, and occasionally dumps the data structure to disk?

Or is something like memcached better?

My preferred way of storing into RAM would be of course only storing changes, instead of storing the whole tree into RAM on every write.

Re:Ask YC: Expressive languages for spatial nodes on Monday February 04, 2008 @01:13AM (#108974)
Thank you very much. Can you give me your email? I'm @gmail with the same YC username I use.
Re:Ask YC: Expressive languages for spatial nodes on Monday February 04, 2008 @01:12AM (#108973)
Brilliant, thanks. Yes, RAM is a good option for me.

I figure 2 GB will last me 4 months. Then I can go up to 4, 8, 16, ...

Pretty good.
