Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:13AM (#50337900)
I think it's just brand, ubuntu was what I knew from using it as a personal desktop and then it's the default/most obvious option for a lot of providers, I think even 10+ years ago AWS EC2 defaulted to it above Debian, digital ocean too I think?

I don't remember why exactly but it was definitely just 'linux VPS = Ubuntu' for a long time. I think they got reputation as being the 'just works' option because they were happier to include some non-free graphics drivers etc where Debian was the more pure option but most end users didn't care

But since they added snap and I started running into issues with trying to install Docker etc a few years ago I default to Debian now and most of the time I don't even know which it is.

have you seen how big enterprises operate? It would generally take much longer from a decision to do something to any action happening, budget approvals etc.

And for anything infosec, unfortunately people who know a lot about infosec have a habit of 'crying wolf' and talking about infosec as some kind of absolute rule that everything has to bow down to with no willingness to balance against other business risks, so probably leadership is used to ignoring the people who knew that this was a big deal and were calling for action.

From May, but I wrote about how similar social/community sites have been following this upside down bell pattern for decades. In this case it might be caused by AI, but you can't conclude anything about AI just by looking at the graph

Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:15AM (#50271299)
I had ~10 years of iTerm2 muscle memory which stopped me switching for ages. I also liked the half-screen dropdown terminals from iTerm that Ghostty doesn't have .

But I switched due some iTerm2 bugs and performance reasons (I'm usually running up to ~100 terminal panes, split across 4-5 windows and up to 9 tabs per window) and it was much easier than I expected. I got used to my hotkeys bringing up full-screen quick terminals instead of half screen ones and that's actually usually what I want anyway, and iterm just feels more hackable in general; my agents are able to help get input to and from the various panes quite easily, and I haven't had a single bug or crash so far.

the m2/m3 announcements were already kind of cringe to keep saying 'HEY IT'S BETTER THAN INTEL' but at this point it's just embarrassing?

I do agree it is out of proportion, they deserve a lot more amplification

Any 'vibe check' on these; I don't have benchmarks but I tried out Le Chonk for general coding work that they claim it works really well at and I was very disappointed, it seemed to make all kinds of obvious errors of the kind that I haven't seen from opus, sol, deepseek flash etc in over a year
Re:Pi 1.0 on Thursday October 01, 2026 @04:01PM (#49926391)
I use claude code and codex in a terminal like a caveman too.

then i use pi in a terminal like a caveman to try the open models like deepseek etc.

I also have pi running on a VPS. I have a custom Django app that calls out to it for a bunch of stuff. I don't know how the full system works because the agents built it but basically I think one pi uses a whatsapp wrapper to constantly listen to a whatsapp group and find bills. Then those get added to the Django Database which triggers a second pi + deepseek to OCR them, parse out the data like amount, due date, reference etc, and update the database with that. I have a trigger to 'merge duplicate', which is also just a prompt and pi.

Yes you can do all this without a harness and just the model APIs directly but the harness means it can use linux tools to crop the PDFs etc, so when I also wanted a new feature that crops out the bank details and lets me hover over and see the original before making the payment for a bill that's just another tweak to pi's prompt (or more meta, me prompting my agent to update pi's prompt).

Workplace is such a confusing overloaded term.

They also have "Mijn Bureau" which I tried out and wrote about here [0] which is the MS Office alternative.

I take it this is the layer below that, an operating system?

But it all looks quite fragmented still from what I can see, especially now that it's also split across GitHub and CodeBerg as well as being split across different organizations, and trying to collaborate with other efforts by other European countries while still remaining distinct.

TypeSafe also makes an adaptor available which lets you use traditional LLMs as Jev if you just want the interface without the model https://github.com/typesafe-ai/system-one-adapter-python

how many do you add before they become more fancy at auto complete than humans though
