Re:Linux command line techniques: IO redirection and piping on Thursday November 04, 2010 @07:46AM (#1868479)
Of course its just basics, its a good start for beginners. It reminds me of the stuff I used to teach to junior programmers wanting to explore Linux.. Im already an advanced Linux user, but there's always something you haven't come accross yet... Thats one of the things I like best about Linux in general and bash.
There's also this thing called OpenBTS, but a search for it only lists about 17.000 results http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=openbts&#...
Re:World Wide Web Contact Lenses Possible on Wednesday November 03, 2010 @09:20PM (#1867195)
I want to order two of these, where can I get them?
I code Flash too, on 2.26 Ghz laptop running 4gb and multiple distro's, no real problems here..

A lot of us Flash coders actually want to drop Flash from our websites, widgets and resumes. It performs bad and puts a lot of stress on the CPU, blocking my vital programs from running.

I also dont like Flash because Flex Builder is not a free tool and because of all the security issues in Flash that Adobe just never seems to get fixed. http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-20.ht....

Potentially leaving my computer including webcam feed and microphone wide open to anyone having an exploit before I update. http://blog.guya.net/2008/10/07/malicious-camera-spying-usin....

However, I think Flash (or read Actionscript 3.0) is a necessary evil to be able to do what you want to do.. fast and to a mass audience, see this table for statistics http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/vers....

I've been coding Actionscript for some time now, but only started really liking it when 3.0 came out. I remember when the Papervision project became popular I loved coding Actionscript.... I still do and I dont think JS has the right properties to become anything close to Flash.

Adobe really is on the right way by including hardware accelerated graphics. http://www.tgdaily.com/software-features/38273-adobe-flash-p....

I hope they improve upon this a bit though..

Re:Linux command line techniques: IO redirection and piping on Wednesday November 03, 2010 @12:42PM (#1865379)
Very nice, thanks for sharing
Yeah in the old days it performed quite bad. Nowadays with the newer distro's like suse 11, (k)ubuntu and a couple of others I really havent found any more glitches than on any regular windows machine running flash..
Re:Oracle: Google 'directly copied' our Java code on Sunday October 31, 2010 @09:40PM (#1855031)
I wouldnt want to go the mono way either.. That would mean coding everything to .NET?
Re:Use Vim Like A Pro on Sunday October 31, 2010 @09:03PM (#1854936)
Thats exactly what I like about Vim.. Small footprint is really great on an multi user environment or when editing or viewing large files like logfiles.

I was used to editing files over ssh with Vi, but after they improved;) I was hooked on Vim forever. Vim really is an absolute a must-have skill in your toolbox.

Re: Why is techcrunch.com taking 50+ seconds to fully load? on Thursday October 28, 2010 @07:08PM (#1845355)
No, Im having the same problems ever since they first introduced their "smooth" scrolling features and it gets my CPU running flatout.

Its the same in every browser I work with, it takes a long while to load. And when it's finally done loading, it still has to get the content for the visible viewport when scrolling.

Thats pretty much the problem with not only TC's website, but actually a lot of these sites out there nowadays use this javascript scrolling feature. Remember the new Google images UI?

I usually get around this with Firefox's excellent web dev toolbar. I Check the "disable cache", "disable images" and "disable javascript". Finally I check "persist features" to save my configuration and my TC and Elgoog images load in like milliseconds..

Re:New Java trojan attacks Mac OS X via social networking sites on Thursday October 28, 2010 @11:59AM (#1843407)
This is not entirely true. There will be only 1 popup asking the user's permission to "run" java code through the browser. After that, the applet can download anything on the box it needs and execute it.

The applet has full access to the local filesystem with the same priviliges the original user has. If needed the hackers can further exploit the machine, by escalating user priviliges with some corrupt scripting..

One click is enough to seriously damage your machine, be careful;) This is what the popup looks like in Firefox http://www.ussu.ca/studentgroups/JavaApplet.jpg

Re:Hacker intercepts phone calls with DIY $1,500 IMSI catcher on Thursday October 28, 2010 @10:26AM (#1842977)
GSM was cracked a long while ago, but now after Karsten Nohl has published his 1.7 TB rainbow tables via torrents, script kiddies will eventually be able to hack into your phones..

http://www.darknet.org.uk/2010/08/gsm-hacking-coming-to-the-...

Has anyone thought of what is gonna replace our broken A5/1 GSM privacy the next couple of years? Will we need new handsets to provide us with the next-gen cellphone encryption?

I am on a unix platform, why should I use Cain Able?
Nice article, Was looking at some supercomuters myself not too long ago.. Then I figured out these things were pretty expensive and started building them myself..

This is a great advance in technology. The Cray XT5 delivers 1.75 Pflops, but is dwarfed by the Tianhe-1A's 4.669 petaflops when all its graphics processing units are operational.

Also to do the job, the Cray needed 224.000 processors This new Tianhe-1A needs "only" 21.500 which is great even if you are never going to carry your supercomputer around from time to time anyway..

Re:Facebook - Can it defeat The Google? on Thursday October 28, 2010 @08:25AM (#1842583)
Really, Who will defeat The Google? Facebook?

Cuil thought about doing that, but got cuilled (read killed) themselves a while ago, apparently not the Google killer we were hoping for.. http://www.fool.com/investing/high-growth/2010/09/20/death-o...

MS Bing is not really up to the task either.. 2011 is going to add 2 big players to the market: Ipad search and Facebook search..

Ipad could really become a Google killer, even the guys in Mountain View could see that coming.. Thats why they named their device Ipad-killer.. http://www.helium.com/items/1730715-google-ipad

Facebook had their $33 billion valuation by Google last month, but is bound to grow into even more intensive figures http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/08/20/the-case-for-a-50-bil...

Facebook will have to catch up fast with their cash and innovate even faster. Maybe even buy more engineers from Google Plex..

Re:Does Java need a "Linux moment"? on Thursday October 28, 2010 @06:47AM (#1842426)
Does the world need its Linux moment? The USPTO is a real mess for anybody believing in open source technologies, everybody knows that..

Java cant have a bright future within Ellison's hands, who is only trying to beat Google by buying up revenue streams: Market cap Oracle: $144.28 Billion Market cap Google: $196.24 Billion

There is also news that Oracle might be invloved in large scale fraud: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870357810457539...

Keep your head up Java, you'll never walk alone..

Re:Oracle: Google 'directly copied' our Java code on Thursday October 28, 2010 @05:54AM (#1842348)
That is definitely true.. Java is one of the languages I really like, and now Oracle forces out the father of Java, James Gosling. And they didnt even treat him nice..

http://www.techeye.net/software/father-of-java-forced-out-by...

Oracle went on strangling Java by putting up registration forms everytime I want a clean JRE or JDK, asking me to leave all my details or to login...

Hang in there Java, you're in for a hell of a Oracle ride..

Re:Firebug Metamorphosis on Tuesday October 26, 2010 @08:14PM (#1836714)
Me too, Everybody has his or her likes.. Have been working pretty hardcore on web development for 10 years now but will stick with firefox for debugging because I use a lot of their tools, for example: Firebug, Web dev Toolbar, HttpLiveHeaders, Rainbow and a couple more superior extensions..
Re:2010 is becoming a good year in shutting down big botnets. on Tuesday October 26, 2010 @08:00PM (#1836677)
Exactly, they'll fake it just like hckers fake Firefox security warning... http://www.gdatasoftware.co.uk/security-labs/news/news-detai...

What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes...

Re:2010 is becoming a good year in shutting down big botnets. on Tuesday October 26, 2010 @10:44AM (#1834364)
Yeah I agree, there really should be some guidelines concerning the messages government people leave behind on hacked computers. How are users supposed to know if the message is real or authtentic? Its not like they send you a PGP key to go with it..
Re:Silicon valley out, Graphene valley in on Friday October 22, 2010 @06:44AM (#1819184)
There was an article about graphene I read a while ago. Only now it starts to really take off. Graphene is going to be the new silicon scientists say: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/graphene-replace-silicon-da...

And IBM already used it to build 100Ghz supercomputers according to this article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/188656/ibm_details_worlds_fas...

It is not that farfetched to think that in the pretty near future graphene will be used for flexible displays: http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/article/HONSHI/20090225/166337/

The future for commercial graphene applications is virtually unlimited and is going to explode exponentially within the next couple of years.

Silicon out, graphene in..
