Ask HN: Has anybody switched to software engineering from machine learning?

I used to be a software engineer for 3 years. Then I studied NLP for MSc and now I am an applied scientist at a FAANG company. I like my job because it's intellectually challenging and I like research but one thing I miss a lot is coding. I code far less than I used to. Because we mostly do data gathering and fine-tuning, which is pretty standard in any sort of applied positions but doesn't...

Ask HN: How to disable my analytical side after work?

I'm highly analytical and this has helped me a lot in my careers as an engineer and scientist. But outside of work, in personal life, I really suffer from it, and the overthinking resulted from it. The situation has become much worse as a result of living alone during the pandemic. Is there anyway to become intellectually shallow like having an IQ<100, after work? (Except meditation that is...

Ask HN: How do you manage your learning while being busy with a full time job?

I'm a curious person and I have thirst for knowledge and learning. There are tons of stuff that I've always wanted to learn. When I was a BSc student, I remember I used to learn actively and I used to do self-defined projects. But after graduation and getting employed things have changed. Let's say I want to learn a new programming language by doing a self-defined project or some math like...

I guess yes. I recently found out that some part of my motivations about doing things has been getting feedback from people (It releases dopamine and makes you feel validated). I used to be a software engineer and I'm somehow obsessed with designing software architectures with minimum cost of change in future. It makes me crazy to design something on-the-fly without considering the cost of changes. That's the reason I have obsession for writing general-purpose abstract codes... It really makes me crazy but I don't know what to do with it...

Ask HN: How do you get over perfectionism/overthinking in hobby projects?

I have many empty repositories at Github which were supposed to be ML softwares. The reason is that whenever I started to write code, I was obsessed with making it abstract, extendable, modular, easy-to-read, ... (Rare thing among ML softwares) So most of my time was spent on designing modules without writing any actual ML code! And then I got disappointed and let it go. Any suggestion on how...
