@mc42 They use a common layer called "VCS server". Here's how it looks like from the system architecture standpoint: https://docs.rhodecode.com/RhodeCode-Enterprise/admin/system...

We've been using https://rhodecode.com for internal repositories: it is also open source, yet has better interface and out-of-the-box LFS support.

We ended up with RhodeCode for internal repositories. It is open source as well, but in our case, security (we're a hedge fund) is critical. None of the other platforms were able to correspond to our needs. Besides, RhodeCode has a nice community of developers: https://community.rhodecode.com
RhodeCode launched the developer program for the open source contributors of it's RhodeCode CE (Community Edition, AGPLv3). They even have "badges of power" (developers who contribute code get rights to moderate discussions on the Community Portal).

Agree, Mercurial definitely lacks a self-hosting platform. Not quite sure about _truly Open Source_ though: AGPLv3 is also Open Source (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/agpl-3.0.en.html).

Regardless of the license compatibility, RhodeCode seems to be developed much more actively (looking at https://code.rhodecode.com/).
