Re:Why Do Companies Still Use Microsoft Windows For Displays? on Saturday November 16, 2013 @12:14PM (#6745472)
I think its really about lowering barriers to entry. The more people that understand how to operate a system decreases risk. Plenty of people understand Window OS and how to run an application. With this knowledge everyone just can be an expert on how to operate the displays.
Re:Why I Moved Away From Microsoft ASP.NET on Monday September 23, 2013 @08:41AM (#6430380)
ASP.NET is a great tool. If you were to walk into a gig that has a large amount of apps running VS, IIS and SQL Server, its no way you'd even suggest full blown open source. If things were reversed and all they had was Django, Apache and MySQL then of course you'd be a unwise to suggest moving to ASP.NET. I think as programmers we forget we must constantly use the information presented to make the best decision on which tool to use.

IMHO - Your article should read more like your customer base has changed, thus your tools have changed.

Re:If I can't see your work - you're crap on Thursday August 15, 2013 @05:20PM (#6220680)
I've been the victim of this before myself. I've written a 100 plus million dollar billing system for a fortune 500 company. have 10+ years development experience using the full breadth of MS products. Majority of my work has been done for clients with revenues in the billions. Yet,The interview panel wanted to know did I have something on GitHub...

Re:What am I missing about QR codes? on Monday January 07, 2013 @02:07AM (#5019833)
Here is a thoughtful implementation of there use. http://youtu.be/h7HnR02kJxY
If you're concerned about code theft, you can always just use a minimizer. That usually obfuscates your code beyond readability.
Re:Google Maps for iOS on Thursday December 13, 2012 @04:44PM (#4918259)
I live in Atlanta and Apple maps let me down numerous occasions. I like their interface and integration but, the data quality & quantity is bad.
I'm a Microsoft developer. I'd suggest using the .NET framework with WPF or Winforms for the speed of development. Plus there are tons of examples and tutorials to help you along the way. Also hands down Visual Studio is one of the best IDE's available. (no flames please)

Re:Poll: Will you buy Facebook stock? on Thursday February 02, 2012 @03:27PM (#3544286)
I will buy. Solely based on what Benjamin Graham suggest "Invest in what you use". Everyone uses fb.
I wouldn't suggest anyone learn Ruby as a 1st language. I say this from a readability standpoint. I'd recommend python as a 1st language. My second recommendation is .NET / C#. You get the most bang for you buck. (WinForms / Silverlight / ASP.NET)

I know everyone is over hyped on open source xy or z but in reality these require a good knowledge of a lot of various pieces of technology.

I suffered in Birmingham for almost 3yrs of my life. I realized the error in my ways and moved. The closet thing to a real politician was forced out a few years ago. Everyone else is bought
Re:Opensource tool to create slowmotion videos from your footage on Wednesday November 30, 2011 @05:10PM (#3297133)
This is quite amazing! I was thinking if you could use this application with a video based security could you reduce the amount of disk space required. Thoughts? I'm sure there are other applications as well
Re:Ask HN: How to think on the spot and persuade? on Saturday November 19, 2011 @12:12PM (#3255656)
I have seen many people have this issue. Being very smart and not being able to construct and argument on the feet. I always advise them to join Toastmasters. I'm a member and it has greatly improved my persuasive abilities.
Im located in Atlanta, GA. Im a web dev myself. I have been looking for some interesting startups. I've worked in corporate America for 12 years and work part time projects as well. qas1981 at gmail.com
I dont think you have to be a jerk to have a successful team. I do understand what your alluding to. I find that being a successful team leader you have to be very decisive. This sometimes means giving the opinionated but talented team member a firm no. Sometimes this can bruise egos or offend. But it has to be done for progress to be made.
Re:Google Calendar Redesign: It's Goddamn Terrible on Friday July 01, 2011 @08:00PM (#2720638)
What we see here is a power user that doesnt represent the general google calendar users. I love the new design.

Email based video conversion?

I hate when I get videos that are in a format I cant view on my iPhone. Is there a need for email based video conversion? I've cooked up a service that receives emails with improperly formatted videos then sends back a proper format for mobile viewing. Thoughts?

SHOW HN: Script for creating Mac sparsebundles on NFS

https://github.com/qas1981/TimeMachine-to-Windows

I created this script to assist in creating Mac TimeMachine backups on NFS. As where I am a Mac user that has Windows File Servers. Steps 1. Setup NFS on Mac 2. Run Script 3. Set up TimeMachine to use NFS.<p>The script makes some huge assumptions. Let me know what you thoughts or if you find it useful.

Re:Has YC ever funded a company with a Black founder? on Monday March 21, 2011 @10:24AM (#2349784)
I'm in Atlanta, black, a programmer and and I casually take notice and see that most of the faces that surround me aren't those that look like me. I tend to wonder the same questions at times. It's a question of is the game we play skewed towards a certain outcome. If it is how do we play?
Re:Apple Launches Subscriptions on the App Store on Tuesday February 15, 2011 @01:26PM (#2222489)
I think as apple continues the clamp down on there products people will gain interest in the Android platform. Google can really destroy apple by providing the same services at a lower cost. I would imagine that is there game plan. So when Apple has completely offended every content producer they will jump ship.
interested!
Re:Tell HN: I quit my job to bootstrap my startup by myself. on Monday February 14, 2011 @10:57PM (#2220074)
Really its out of comfort and fear of the unknown. I do freelance development and it scratches the itch I have to do interesting work for now. I also have decided to wait until I stumble upon a great idea. Really I'm to the point now I'm just working for healthcare. Meaning I'm paid well but spend nada.
Re:Tell HN: I quit my job to bootstrap my startup by myself. on Monday February 14, 2011 @03:18PM (#2218440)
I'm 29 and thought about quitting and doing my own and was talked out of it by my older peers at my corporate job. I was about 24 for then. In hindsight it was by far one of my regrettable decisions. I see products and ideas being created that were all in my personal incubator. Not to mention they are all profitable. So I say this, if you have internet, time & a mind anything is possible. Good luck on your ventures. I'm sure success will find you.
Re:Poll: What is your social security number? on Thursday January 27, 2011 @01:07AM (#2146804)
When I looked at this poll I was really curious as to who would post their social! I'm sure tons of others did too!
