Is the only difference between this and all the other gift registries like http://wantsthis.com http://wishpot.com etc. that they handle payment/customer service? I'd be curious to see how things like returns and really odd items like "cash" are handled.
MuscleNerd (of the iPhone Dev Team) said after looking through the code, this is complete FUD.

Its most useful for people who do a lot of shopping online for friends and family members.

Excellent suggestion, other people have also told me the front page needs a bit of work and I agree. Thanks for the input

I think I saw this on another site, I'll see if their API allows for deleting and adding items externally.

Fix is going up for this in the next few minutes, thanks!

You should be able to use an apostrophe in a password without issue as we did test for that. I'll see if I can reproduce that error.

1. We attempted to white list the recently added and most popular lists by trusted sites. It seems amazon sells adult toys, so we will have to tweak that filter a bit...

2. Very true, I'll switch that to something more user friendly

Localization is important to use, especially regarding sites like Amazon, we are currently working on getting it integrated. Thanks for the feedback!

An excellent idea! Thanks!
Re:Ask HN: Please review my web app: WantsThis on Sunday November 22, 2009 @07:34PM (#956490)
Good idea, I'll see how feasible it is to work that in. We are slowly adding more sites as we discover their API's and such. We hope to at least cover all the main shopping sites.

I am seeing the FireFox issue, I think the CSS needs to be tweaked a little more. I am investigating the results for the search items now.. Thanks for the bug finding!

We have affiliate accounts on some online shopping sites, on those items we get a small commission for the sale.

1) Its usable forever, its checked by cookies but you could just return to that URL and continue using it. However its possible that another user could add remove things, which is why the password protection exists.

2) That was important to us, glad it came across that way.

3) Thanks, looking into it.

4) We have a number of affiliates including Amazon, hopefully with more traffic we can expand. We are also looking into recommendations and price matching directly related to affiliates.

You should receive a message at the top of your list if you have an auto-created list. I'll do some testing on chrome, thanks!

Ask HN: Please review my web app: WantsThis

We just launched last week into a pretty competitive market. The site was built with two people, myself and my partner over roughly 8 months. I did all the design/frontend while he handled all the programming. We'd love to hear any feedback you guys/gals have.http://wantsthis.com

Re:Correcting for the first-player advantage in Risk on Thursday September 17, 2009 @12:49PM (#828345)
This was actually addressed in the newer version of the game, Risk 2008 Revised edition, states in the rules:

Player 3 receives an additional card Player 4 receives an additional card Player 5 receives two additional cards

In the games we play, this usually neutralizes the first players advantage.

"the top users tell us they are playing this game for 20-50 hours a week"

What's that work out to hourly about $7/hour? Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Re:Design HN: How many designers read HN? on Thursday July 30, 2009 @11:30AM (#732407)
I am a full-time Creative Director who likes to tinker with writing web apps, mostly front-end development. I leave most of the heavy lifting to the real hackers.
After getting jumped and getting my jaw broken in the fight, I lived off KFC mashed potatoes with extra gravy, tomato soup, beer and banana milkshakes.

I ended up losing about 20 lbs off my already skinny frame even with chugging as many weight gainer shakes as I could stomach per day.

Why not wrap these new features into "Live", it seems like they are also going to be competing with themselves.

The tag line is horrible: "When it comes to decisions that matter, Bing & Decide." I prefer the name "Live", since it seems more relevant.

Yes, Kumo (and Kiev) are the internal codenames.

I've been a designer in adult for 10+ years now and your correct about not being able to use your work portfolio for mainstream clients. However it's not as bad as it might seem, most of the designers I know in the industry run sites or design plenty of other things than can be used in their portfolios, if they ever do decide to switch jobs. I've interviewed hundreds of people and rarely do I ever care about their previous companies, all I want to see is how well they can design, not who they designed for.

Granted I also wouldn't want to work for a company that would be biased against a designer who did adult work, so for me personally, it makes sense. If you have hesitations, I would fully recommend passing on working in adult.
